Four Horses To Consider For Your Grand National Shortlist – Grand National Favourites

sam boswell Grand National picks

The team at BetVictor have challenged me to produce four Grand National 2024 contenders and said I can’t just pick the first four in the betting. The race will have a different look this year with a reduction in runners after a safety review of the worlds most watched race. As a result, it is even harder to get in and has a very Irish look to it with very few UK runners likely to make the cut.

As ever, it is always hard to pick out the winner on the day let alone in advance. Given the current forecast, I am working on a soft ground come the day, but we all know how changeable the British Weather can be.

Leading Contenders for Aintree

Corach Rambler Defending Champion

Back-to-back Grand Nationals really are reserved for the greats of the sport. Currently your 5/1* favourite (shifted from 9/2) for the race there is plenty to like about Lucinda Russell’s ten-year-old. A mark of 159 looks very fair and his third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup looks a fantastic prep. Many will want to be with him but at the price, he is skinny enough. One to wait for the day as I am almost certain he will get at least a point or two bigger come the day of the race. Soft ground wouldn’t be an issue, nor would it matter if it dried. A worthy favourite for the 2024 Grand National.

Limerick Lace To Lead For The Ladies

Friday is traditionally Aintree’s Ladies Day, but plenty will be keen on the chances of Gavin Cromwell’s leading lady Limerick Lace. A winner of the Mares Chase on the soft ground at the Cheltenham Festival, she needs to prove that this kind of stamina test is up her street. Just the one start over 3 miles saw a second at Navan in the Troytown. She won’t mind the weather forecast, as wetter should be better for her chances, whilst she still has to prove her stamina for a trainer who has some record for plundering British races. Don’t be shocked if she outruns her price of 25/1.

Ignore Gordon Elliott’s Grand National Energy At Your Peril

As trainers for races go Gordon Elliott certainly is a man who knows what it takes to win a staying chase and has a fine record in the Grand National. Tiger Roll is often the first horse people will associate with his best staying chasers. It was notable when the dispersal sale of Caldwell horses took place, Chemical Energy was one that the team seemed very interested in keeping with his current handler. His profile perhaps doesn’t scream great value, but he has bits of form that give the impression he could just come to light at Aintree. He has a decent record and is fresh, most in here will have had much busier seasons. A second in the National Hunt Chase last season over a marathon trip, shows that I think that box is ticked to enjoy the distance. Perhaps more traditional spring ground would be in his favour, but he still makes my shortlist.

Roi Mage Can Give You A Run At A Huge Price

Let’s face it, 12-year-olds don’t win many Grand Nationals, but Roi Mage is a very interesting horse for Patrick Griffin. He is two pounds lower than when he ran in the race last year. He arrives this year with a similar prep and took a French Cross-Country Race back in November. He has a clear love for the National type fences and at 66/1 could just be an each-way play to pick up the pieces. He also gets the added bonus of having James Revely back on board for the big race ride.
