One of the most thrilling sports to watch on TV or in person, you can take your enjoyment of hockey to a whole new level when you place a bet and get some skin in the game.
From the NHL and Stanley Cup to the IIFH World Championship, there’s a stack of different events and competitions to bet on throughout the year – you’ll find ones for all of them available right here at BetVictor Canada.
So here’s your guide to the many different hockey betting lines available.
The most popular competition for hockey betting is undoubtedly the NHL, the sprawling campaign that brings together the best franchises in North America in a pursuit of the Stanley Cup.
You’ll find hockey odds for the post-season playoffs and Stanley Cup games too, as well as lines for the other most popular domestic leagues in Scandinavia, the rest of Europe and beyond, as well as international competitions such as the annual IIHF World Championships.
When you bet on hockey games with BetVictor Canada, you’ll notice that there are dozens of different lines available.
Here’s a quick overview of some of the most popular:
The most straightforward of the hockey betting lines, with a moneyline bet you’re simply trying to predict which of the teams will win the game.
From strength of schedule and form to injuries and team news, there are many different variables to consider before placing hockey moneyline bets – but it feels particularly satisfying when your analysis of a game yields a winner.
Win or lose, you can maximize your bankroll by betting responsibly - more information on safer gambling can be found here.
Similar in style to moneyline, puck line is a type of hockey bet that allows you to take a greater risk, for a higher reward, about a team’s chances.
The puck line assigns a mythical handicap or headstart on the two teams – similar to a spread when NFL or NBA betting. So, the Senators may be -1.5 goals against the Capitals, who get +1.5.
For your puck line bet on the Senators to land, they would need to win the game by two or more goals. For Capitals backers to be successful, they can win the game, tie or even lose by a one-goal margin – all outcomes covered by their +1.5 goal line.
If you want to be a little less predictive with your hockey bets today, you can instead simply wager on how many goals you think will be scored during the match.
You’ll see a host of lines available here at BetVictor Canada: 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, 6.5 and so on. You can predict whether a game will see ‘over’ the total amount of goals taken, or ‘under’.
There are prop lines for both team and player performance.
For the former, team goals and winning margin are two of the most popular options, while for the latter you can wager on how many goals a player will score (over or under the given line), as well as how many shots they will take and how many assists they will provide.
For a different way to wager, you can instead try to predict who will win a league or competition.
We offer outright odds for the Stanley Cup and other NHL matters like divisional and conference winners, as well as other competitions such as the IIHF World Championship.
When you take a look at the hockey odds for tonight, you may be confused by the fractional format and what the different lines actually mean.
So here are some of basic hockey odds explained:
Washington Capitals: -125
Ottawa Senators: +105
In two-way odds for hockey, there’s a favorite (where the American odds are negative) and an underdog (where the American odds are positive).
In the example above, a $100 winning wager on the Capitals at -125 would yield $180 ($80 profit, $100 stake returned), while a successful $100 bet on the Senators at +105 would return $205 ($105 profit, $100 stake returned).
Washington Capitals (-1.5): +130
Ottawa Senators (+1.5): -150
The larger the gap between the two numbers in the hockey odds tonight, the ‘longer’ the odds are for an underdog, but the hotter a favourite will be considered to be.
So, a $100 wager on the Capitals at +130 would yield $230 ($130 profit, $100 stake returned), while a successful $150 bet on the Senators at -150 would return $250 ($100 profit, $150 stake returned).
The secret to successful betting is understanding value – i.e. where the odds, and the return, are favourable based upon the outcome required.
