NFL Week 17 Tips and Odds

The NFL action continues throughout the festive period, with week 17 covering Christmas Day itself. Football fans are in for a treat with a variety of high-profile games between the 25th and 31st of December, as teams look to set themselves up for success as we enter the New Year!  

While some divisions are already finalized with just weeks of the regular season left, there is still plenty to play for, with the race for both conferences and the overall top spot in the NFL still being up for grabs.

Game 1: Kansas City Chiefs @ Pittsburgh Steelers

Of course, when it comes to week 17 of the NFL, we simply have to talk about this explosive match-up that is scheduled for Christmas Day involving these two juggernaut teams. The Kansas City Chiefs have already claimed the top spot in the AFC West and have the potential to walk out of Pittsburgh on Christmas day as champions of the entire American Football Conference ahead of the Buffalo Bills.  

As for the Steelers, they cannot mathematically contest for the American Football League title, however, a victory here could help them to close the show on the AFC North, as they sit just above the Baltimore Ravens.   

One of the key talking points approaching this game is the severity of Patrick Mahomes’ ankle injury, which saw him leave the field against the Browns on Sunday the 15th of December. Although reports suggest he will be starting on Christmas Day, his performance could still be impacted if Mahomes’ is not 100%.  

When looking at the overall standings and the teams that the Chiefs have faced so far in the 2024/25 season, this game will certainly be one of their toughest tests. However, if superstar Mahomes’ is back at his best, he should be able to cause real trouble for the Steelers, allowing the Chiefs to cover the -2.5 spread and solidify themselves as the American Football Conference victors!  

Game 2: Seattle Seahawks @ Chicago Bears

• Our Pick: Seattle Seahawks -2.5  

Next up is the Bears against the Seahawks, a game in which a victory could see the team from Seattle climb to the top of the NFC West. Adversely, the Bears will finish their season at the very bottom of the NFC North division. However, they will still be eager for a win to help them make progress in the conference and overall standings, even if it’s more for pride than anything else.  

Now, we do have to briefly touch on the injury front for the Seahawks, as it looks like they will be missing some key players for their encounter with the Bears. The most notable is superstar running back Kenneth Walker III, who has only done light work on his way to recovery at the time of writing. Tight End Noah Fant and Wide Receiver DK Metcalf are both questionable for the clash, alongside many others.  

Although many experts would say that the Seattle Seahawks are clearly the better team, the Chicago Bears do dominate the recent head-to-head record, winning all three of the last encounters between the pair. The Bears also have a much better home record this season (4-3), when compared to their dismal performances on the road (0-7).  

When factoring in all of the injuries in the Seahawks camp, the -2.5 spread seems accurate, although we still think the Bears are likely to continue their offensive woes. Geno Smith will likely be the player to watch in this one and should he find success, the cobbled-together Seahawks could get the job done in a relatively convincing way.   

Game 3: Atlanta Falcons @ Washington Commanders

• Time: 8:20 pm EDT  

• Our Pick: Washington Commanders -4.5  

As for our last pick of this week, it comes in a game featuring the Washington Commanders and the Atlanta Falcons, which has been flexed to Sunday the 29th of December 2024 for prime-time viewing. It will replace the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns game, as far less is at stake in that encounter.   

The form for both of these teams hasn’t been great, with the Falcons and the Commanders only winning 1 and 2 games from their past five fixtures, respectively. Of course, if there was ever a time to turn things around, this will be the game to do it in, particularly for the Falcons who still have a shot at topping the NFC South division, while the Commanders are still in the hunt for postseason, too.  

When we take a step back and look at the entirety of the 2024/25 NFL season, the Commanders have been the better team and are favored by 4.5 points when looking at the betting spread. The same spread would have been covered in the past 4 meetings between the two, as the Commanders also have the edge in the head-to-head. We think this game will be the start of the Falcons fizzling out before the final week of action, while the Commanders keep their hopes of the playoffs alive by covering the -4.5 spread!
