Few quarterbacks have achieved as much team and individual success during the early portion of their career as Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. Within his first five years in the NFL, he was already being compared to some of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. It’s not just because he’s performed at an MVP level. It’s also because he’s made the Chiefs a dominant force and a perennial Super Bowl contender. That’s why we wanted to take a look at his career through a lens of team success, looking at Patrick Mahomes’ Super Bowl record and the Super Bowl rings he’s won.
Patrick Mahomes’ Super Bowl Career
Mahomes became the full-time starting quarterback for the Chiefs at the start of the 2018 season. Starting with that season, Mahomes led Kansas City to either the Super Bowl or one game from the Super Bowl in each of his first five seasons as a starter. Beginning with the 2018 season, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 12-4 record and a spot in the AFC Championship Game. Despite winning MVP honors that season, Mahomes didn’t get the Chiefs to the Super Bowl. Kansas City lost in overtime to Tom Brady and the Patriots in the first playoff meeting between Mahomes and Brady.
In 2019, Mahomes also led the Chiefs to a 12-4 record during the regular season. In the playoffs, Kansas City overcame deficits against both the Texans and the Titans to reach Super Bowl LIV. This was Kansas City’s first Super Bowl appearance since the Chiefs won Super Bowl IV. The Chiefs trailed the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl but Mahomes helped them outscore San Francisco 21-0 in the fourth quarter to earn his first Super Bowl win.
Mahomes led the Chiefs to another Super Bowl appearance during the 2020 season. Kansas City was 14-2 during the regular season, putting together one of the best seasons in franchise history. After surviving the Browns and the Bills in the playoffs, the Chiefs reached the Super Bowl for the second straight season. However, Mahomes and the Chiefs were bested again by Brady, who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 31-9 win.
Coming off a loss to the Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 12-5 record in 2021. In the playoffs, Kansas City barely survived in a 42-36 overtime win over the Bills in the Divisional Round. However, the Chiefs lost to the Bengals 27-24 in overtime the following week in the AFC Championship Game, depriving them of three straight Super Bowl appearances.
Alas, Mahomes and the Chiefs came back strong in 2022 on a quest to get back to the Super Bowl. For the second time in his career, Mahomes was awarded league MVP honors. Following a 14-3 record during the regular season, the Chiefs escaped close playoff games against the Jaguars and Bengals before meeting the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. Kansas City trailed 24-14 at halftime but Mahomes led another comeback. He led a five-minute drive in the closing minutes to set up a field goal from Harrison Butker with eight seconds left in the game to give the Chiefs a 38-35 win, the second of Patrick Mahomes Super Bowl rings.
Patrick Mahomes’ Super Bowl Wins
As mentioned, Mahomes has been victorious in two of his three Super Bowl appearances. In both wins, Mahomes has been the star of the game, winning Super Bowl MVP honors in both Super Bowl LIV and Super Bowl LVII.
In Super Bowl LIV, the Chiefs struggled at times with Mahomes throwing two interceptions. Following a Raheem Mostert touchdown late in the third quarter, Kansas City trailed 20-10. However, the game belonged to Mahomes and the Chiefs from that point forward. In the fourth quarter, Mahomes threw touchdown passes to Travis Kelce and Damien Williams, the first two touchdown passes of his Super Bowl career after he ran for a one-yard touchdown earlier in the game. Williams ran for a 38-yard touchdown later in the fourth quarter, giving Kansas City the last 21 points of the game and capping off a 31-20 win for Mahomes and the Chiefs.
When the Chiefs played in Super Bowl LVII against the Eagles, Mahomes was attempting to snap a long streak of players who failed to win MVP and a Super Bowl in the same season. Much like similar Super Bowl appearances, Mahomes and the Chiefs weren’t at their best in the first half. While Mahomes threw a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce in the first quarter, Kansas City’s only other score in the first half was by the defense on a fumble return by Nick Bolton. However, Mahomes was at his best in the fourth quarter, throwing touchdown passes to Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney, giving him three touchdown passes in the game despite only throwing for 182 yards. Mahomes then led a drive late in the game to set up the game-winning field goal in a 38-35 win that earned Mahomes his second Super Bowl ring and second Super Bowl MVP award.
Patrick Mahomes’ Super Bowl Total Appearances
To date, Mahomes has made three Super Bowl appearances. Those three appearances have come in a span of four seasons and included two wins. However, Mahomes and the Chiefs also lost to the Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV 31-9. In that game, Mahomes had no touchdown passes and two interceptions. He was outplayed by Tom Brady, who threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns while winning the seventh Super Bowl and fifth Super Bowl MVP of his career. In a way, that Super Bowl loss at the hands of Brady set the bar for how many Super Bowls Patrick Mahomes must win to surpass Brady as the best player in NFL history.
