NBA In-Season Tournament: Results and why it was created

Simply put, The NBA In-Season Tournament is a fresh annual competition involving all 30 teams that’s set to make its inaugural appearance in the 2023-24 season. The in-season tournament began on Friday, November 3rd and ended after the Championship game that took place on Saturday, December 9th.

Which team won the first NBA in-season tournament?

The 2023/24 in-season tournament champions are the Lakers, receiving the NBA Cup and each winning player receiving $500,000.

Who won the in-season tournament MVP?

Lebron James won the inaugural NBA in-season MVP title in 2023/24.

How does it work?

The NBA split the league of 30 teams into six groups of five teams. The four group stage matches are scheduled across seven dates in November: four on Fridays (November 3rd, 10th, 17th, and 24th) and three on Tuesdays (November 14th, 21st, and 28th). The quarterfinal matches are set for December 4th and 5th at the venue of the higher-seeded team. The semifinals and championship game will take place on December 7th and 9th in Las Vegas.

The groups are organized by conferences, featuring all 15 teams from each conference. These are further subdivided into five smaller subgroups based on last year’s standings. Consequently, there are five subgroups: Subgroup 1 is composed of teams that secured first, second, and third place in the regular season record last season. Subgroup 2 encompasses teams that finished fourth, fifth, and sixth. Subgroup 3 consists of teams that placed seventh, eighth, and ninth in the standings. Subgroup 4 includes teams that finished 10th, 11th, and 12th, while Subgroup 5 is made up of teams that finished 13th, 14th, and 15th, respectively, in the previous season.

Each team is scheduled to participate in four specified Group Play matches, facing each opponent in its group once, with two games held at home and two on the road. Group Play games are slated for “Tournament Nights,” occurring every Tuesday and Friday between Nov. 3-28 (except for Election Day on Nov. 7).

Eight teams will progress to the Knockout Rounds: the top-performing team in Group Play from each of the six groups, along with one “wild card” team from each conference. This wild card will be the team from each conference that achieved the best record in Group Play games while finishing second in its respective group.

It’s worth noting that Group Play games will be the exclusive NBA matches played on these Tournament Nights. The games will be played in the home team’s arena until the Semifinals and Championship are reached. Both will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which is a neutral site for all participating teams.

Which Teams Belong to Which Groups?

The Eastern Conference is divided into three groups. Group A includes the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, Indiana Pacers, and Detroit Pistons. In Group B, we have the Milwaukee Bucks, New York Knicks, Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, and Charlotte Hornets. Lastly, Group C of the Eastern Conference comprises the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, and Orlando Magic.

The Western Conference also features three groups. Group A includes the Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, LA Lakers, Utah Jazz, and Portland Trail Blazers. Group B of the Western Conference consists of the Denver Nuggets, LA Clippers, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, and Houston Rockets. Finally, Group C comprises the Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, and San Antonio Spurs.

Why is the NBA adding an in-season tournament?

With the NBA playoffs not taking shape until May each season, the in-season tournament is a new fun way for players to compete in meaningful basketball at the beginning of the season. The NBA hopes the tournament garners more attention to the league. By having the tournament start in early November and finish out in December, it’s attempting to compete with other major sports in-season such as college football and the NFL.

Considering the NBA as a business entity, a significant monetary perspective naturally comes into play. The league holds optimism that the in-season tournament will lead to increased revenue. Through avenues such as television rights, akin to the successful Commissioner’s Cup in the WNBA, this could potentially translate to a substantial boost in viewership much earlier in the season than is customary.

How will the NBA in-season tournament impact the regular season and standings?

In order to secure the support of both teams and players, the NBA determined that integrating the in-season tournament into the regular season would be the most effective approach. Because the matches played during the in-season tournament contribute to each team’s regular season record, it is crucial for teams to approach these games with seriousness, given their potential impact on playoff tiebreakers.

What’s in it for the players and the teams?

Players tend to elevate their level of competition when there’s an incentive at stake. As we’re familiar with from their negotiations, the most compelling incentive is often monetary. The in-season tournament offers precisely this opportunity. Every member of the victorious team stands to gain $500,000, while the runners-up will receive $200,000 each. Additionally, players from the losing semi finalist teams will each be granted $100,000, and those from the quarterfinals will each take home $50,000.There will also be a Most Valuable Player award and an all-tournament team for the standout talent during the in-season tournament. On December 9th 2023, the inaugural in-season NBA Cup will be awarded to the winner of the tournament.
