Tyson Fury’s Next Fight Against Oleksandr Usyk

Tyson Fury Next Fight

After avoiding defeat by the skin of his teeth against Francis Ngannou, the question on the minds of boxing fans around the world is: when is the next Tyson Fury fight?

The answer is that Tyson Fury will fight Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world on the 17th of February, 2024.

With his legacy on the line, it doesn’t get any bigger for Fury who will have to successfully negotiate a daunting test against Usyk who also comes into this fight with an undefeated record.

Fury vs Usyk

The next Tyson Fury fight date is scheduled for the 17th of February, 2024 when the Englishman will go toe to toe with Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world. This historic bout will take place at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

For Fury, this bout presents a long-awaited chance to officially be crowned king of this era of heavyweight boxers.

While the 35-year-old may have proclaimed that he is the best of this current generation and indeed all-time, it will count for very little if he comes unstuck against a determined and highly skilled opponent in Usyk.

To that end, both men will arrive in Saudi Arabia with undefeated records but only one will fly out of the Kingdom with theirs intact.

Fury’s overall record reads 35 fights and 34 wins with a solitary draw coming against Deontay Wilder in 2018. Usyk, meanwhile, boasts a 100 % record of 21 fights and 21 wins.

With heavyweight boxing set to get its first undisputed and unified champion since 2000 when Lennox Lewis last accomplished the feat, it stands to reason that this is the biggest fight for almost a quarter of a century.

At odds of -188 to win the match, Fury holds a slender advantage in the latest betting markets going into the bout. Although with Usyk at +150 to win, the reality is that there is very little between these two heavyweight behemoths.

What to Expect in Fury’s Next Fight?

The next fight for Tyson Fury is without question the one that will define his career. Victory, however, is far from assured. Indeed, what seemed like a fairly straightforward task a few months ago is now considered the greatest challenge of Fury’s professional life.

To get a better understanding of why this is the case you have to remember that this undisputed heavyweight match was initially meant to take place on the 23rd of December, 2023.

The reason it has been pushed back to February is that during Fury’s last fight on the 28th of October, he was dramatically caught off guard by former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou who was out for blood.

The Cameroonian-French fighter was irrepressible on the night and even did enough to send the current WBC champion to the canvas in the third round. This was only the seventh time in Fury’s career that an opponent has managed to do this.

During this now-fabled onslaught, Fury was cut on the forehead by Ngannou following a heavy barrage of punches.

Despite the adversity Fury faced against Ngannou, he would eventually edge the contest by way of a contentious split decision. The deep laceration on his forehead, however, would rule him out of action for 60 days owing to boxing’s standard medical procedure.

The jaw-dropping events of October 28th aside, the wider point is that Fury’s match with Usyk had to be delayed after the Englishman suffered a telling injury during one of the most unconvincing performances of his career.

Looking ahead, it is possible that these heart-stopping moments against Ngannou may act as a blessing in disguise as they would have taught Fury a painful lesson about the pitfalls of complacency.

Yes, having flirted with catastrophe against Ngannou, it is highly likely that the world can expect to see a much-improved version of Fury in the ring on February 17th as he returns to a training regime that has got him to the summit of the sport.

Still, beating Usyk – who has recorded 14 knockouts in his 21 career wins to date, won’t be easy. The Ukrainian has so far proved to be an unsolvable conundrum for all of his opponents and this is best summed up by being right-handed but choosing to fight as a southpaw.

This unorthodox style means Usyk is extremely adaptable and can also exploit openings when he sees them. Essentially, Usyk’s array of unique skills should cancel out any height and reach advantage Fury has.

As for who wins this blockbuster fight, this wouldn’t necessarily have been a difficult question to answer a few months ago but Fury’s false step against Ngannou proves that he is human after all. To some degree, Fury’s invincibility has now gone, which hands Usyk a timely psychological advantage.

While boxing can deliver shocks, the only guarantee is that a new undisputed heavyweight champion will be crowned in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the night of the 17th of February.
