The Youngest NHL Players of All Time

the youngest nhl players of all time

The NHL has witnessed numerous young talents displaying their strength right from their rookie years. Armand “Bep” Guidolin established a high standard as the youngest NHL player, gracing the hockey arena at merely 16 years old in 1942. He remains the only player to make his debut in the NHL at 16, although there were plenty of other stars who have come within months of breaking this record.

Interestingly, with the current ruleset, it’s not possible for any player under the age of 18 to make their NHL debut. Players can be drafted at the age of 17. However, they must turn 18 before the following September. Many of these teenagers are still drafted every year, offering invaluable contributions towards their team!

The Youngest NHL Players of All Time

Armand “Bep” Guidolin made his first appearance in the NHL at the tender age of 16 years in 1942, marking him as the youngest player in history. He represented the Boston Bruins at the start of his career, before transferring to Detroit Red Wings and finally, the Chicago Black Hawks, playing his last National Hockey League game in 1952. In total, he played 519 games and accumulated 278 points.

On a similar note, Ted Kennedy launched his NHL journey with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the concluding phase of the 1942-43 season, when he was just 17 years and 2 months old. Born on December 12, 1925, Kennedy had an illustrious career that spread over 14 seasons, during which he won five Stanley Cups and made it to three All-Star game appearances. The crowning glory of his journey was being declared as the MVP for the season of 1954-55.

Here’s a look at the top 5 youngest NHL players of all time, alongside the teams they represented on their debut:

Player Debut Season Age on Debut Team
Armand Guidolin 1942/43 16 years and 11 months Boston Bruins
Ted Kennedy 1942/43 17 years and 2 months Toronto Maple Leafs
Don Raleigh 1943/44 17 years and 4 months New York Rangers
Ross Johnstone 1942/43 17 years, 6 months, and 22 days Boston Bruins
Don Gallinger 1943/44 17 years, 6 months, and 23 days Toronto Maple Leafs

As mentioned earlier, the youngest NHL players must be at least 18 years of age when the season gets underway. This means that no new faces will be making their way into the top 5 unless a significant rule change is introduced in the future, which seems incredibly unlikely, at least for the foreseeable future.
