Today’s Football match: Spain vs Scotland
Scotland have had a dream start to their EURO 2024 campaign picking up the maximum amount of points from their opening five games. Scoring twelve times and only conceding once, Steve Clarke has Scotland fans hopeful of a fourth European Championship campaign.
Thursday’s opponents are Spain, a team Scotland beat 2-0 in the reverse fixture in March. Osasuna centre-back David Garcia famously lambasted the length of the grass at Hampden Park, blaming the pitch for the shock result.
Manchester City star Rodri also claimed the way Scotland play is “not football”. Unfortunately for the Spaniards, their complaining did little to overturn the result and Scotland took home the three points.
The two sides will meet in Seville with the grass cut in Spain’s favour which they have made full use of recently, winning their last three on home soil.
Spain is expected to secure the victory in this fixture. They’ve scored nine goals in their two home games so far in this qualification campaign with their attacking talent coming from some of Europe’s elite clubs.
However, Scotland have also scored five on their travels this campaign with goals coming from unlikely sources such as Scott McTominay. The Manchester United midfielder is the joint second top goal scorer in EURO qualifying with six; more than Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe.
Luis de la Fuente hasn’t been able to settle on a centre-back partnership yet with three different combinations used in the four qualification games. With the recall of Pau Torres, this could become four on Thursday.
The gap has significantly closed between Scotland and Spain compared to previous campaigns. As a result, we believe that both teams will get on the scoresheet in a fiercely contested battle.
