While Slovenia are joining the competition for the second time in their history and the first since the year 2000, they upheld lost just once in their qualifying matches, while Serbia, who have qualified for their first time since competing as Serbia and Montenegro back in the year 2000 as well, suffered multiple defeats in their run-up to the competition and in friendlies up to and including this month. While Slovenia’s coach, Matjaž Kek, will be putting his faith in his goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, to lead from the back and motivate leading scorer Josip Iličić and team youngster Benjamin Šeško forwards, Serbia’s own coach, Dragan Stojković, will be turning to his own captain, Dušan Tadić, their country’s most capped player, alongside vice-captain and scoring powerhouse Aleksandar Mitrović, to bring him all three points. Although Slovenia will undoubtedly do their best to hold Serbia up, Mitrović’s incredible 40 goals in 43 games for Al-Hilal and previous 111 goals in 206 games for Fulham, speaks for itself, and holding him at bay will be difficult. Our prediction is a tightly-fought game but one that will see Serbia emerge victorious on the day.
