Offensive Rookie of the Year

More than in any other sport, rookies enter the NFL ready to compete and make an immediate impact for their team. As with other leagues, the NFL honours these first-year standouts with a rookie of the year award. In the NFL, the league recognizes the Rookies of the Year on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

Offensive Rookie of the Year Betting Preview

The NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award is one that is followed closely by football fans and sports bettors in Canada. Quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers have generally been the recipients of the award. With the NFL season right around the corner, it’s time to take a look at our Canadian sports betting site NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award options.

What is the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award?

The NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Award has been handed out annually since 1957. It recognizes the NFL offensive rookie who had the most outstanding season, and typically rewards strong statistical efforts. It is a regular-season award, so playoff performance is not taken into account as the votes are cast prior to the start of the NFL playoffs.

Voting is done by a panel of 50 Associated Press sportswriters who cover the NFL on a regular basis. As with most NFL awards, it is handed out the night before the Super Bowl at the NFL Honours night. In 2024, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels won the award.

In the 68 years since the award was introduced, it has only been won by quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, once to a tight end, and once to a split end. In all, the award has been won by a quarterback on 12 occasions, running backs on 40 occasions, a wide receiver on 14 occasions, and a tight end and split end once each.

Recent Winners of the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year

Scanning the list of recent NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year winners presents some of the biggest stars in the game. Last season’s winner, Jayden Daniels, had a breakout rookie season and led the Commanders to the NFC Championship game in the playoffs.

Quarterbacks have dominated the award, winning in four of the past six seasons. A running back has not won the award since 2018, which is unusual given that a running back has won in 40 of the 68 years. Here are the recent winners of the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Award:

Who Will Win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2025?

If you’re planning on betting on the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award, you’ve now got an idea which positions will have the highest odds of winning. While quarterbacks are often the focal points of the offence, it seems like we might be due for a bellcow running back to win the award for the first time since Saquon Barkley did in 2018. Luckily for bettors, there is a running back sitting at the top of the oddsboard.

Here is a look at the current NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds board at the BetVictor Canada online sportsbook.

Name Team Position  Starting Odds
Ashton Jeanty Las Vegas Raiders Running Back +275
Cameron Ward Tennessee Titans Quarterback +275
Travis Hunter Jacksonville Jaguars Wide Receiver +800
Omarion Hampton Los Angeles Chargers Running Back +900
Tetairoa McMillan Carolina Panthers Wide Receiver +1000
Tyler Shough New Orleans Saints Quarterback +1100
TreVeyon Henderson New England Patriots Running Back +220
R.J. Harvey Denver Broncos Running Back +2500
Matthew Golden Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver +2500
Jaxson Dart New York Giants Quarterback +2500
Colston Loveland Chicago Bears Tight End +2500
Tyler Warren Indianapolis Colts Tight End +2800
Kaleb Johnson Pittsburgh Steelers Running Back +2800
Emeka Egbuka Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wide Receiver +2800
Shadeur Sanders Cleveland Browns Quarterback +3000

The betting markets have clearly marked Ashton Jeanty and Cam Ward as the two favourites to win the award. There are some interesting options outside of the top two options if you are looking to build a portfolio of futures bets before the season starts.

Jeanty has been the betting favourite ever since he declared himself for the NFL Draft. The 21-year-old had an earth-shattering season last year for Boise State, rushing for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns in 14 games. He was drafted sixth overall by the Las Vegas Raiders in this year’s NFL Draft. Recent running backs who have been selected early in the first round have turned out well, including Saquon Barkley and Bijan Robinson.

Ward landed with the Tennessee Titans, where he will try to turn around a franchise that has lost 35 games over the past three seasons. He has his work cut out for him, but so did Jayden Daniels last year. True talent can overcome adversity and an average supporting cast.

After the two favourites, things can get interesting. It is a strong running back class, and names like Omarion Hampton and TreVeyon Henderson will garner some interest. But all the way down at +2800 sits Kaleb Johnson of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Johnson has the chance to carve out a dominant role in the Steelers’ offence. Former Steeler Najee Harris departed in the offseason and is now the primary competition for the aforementioned Hampton. At +2800, Johnson has as good a chance as any running back not named Jeanty to take home the award.

Travis Hunter has the potential to win both the NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year Awards. Is it likely? Probably not. At +800, he’ll have to not only outshine all of the other rookies, but also last season’s breakout star receiver Brian Thomas Jr., on his own team.

One long-shot wide receiver to consider is Emeka Egbuka of the Buccaneers. All reports are saying that he has been a standout at Bucs training camp. The Tampa Bay offence has been incredible for fantasy the past few years, led by the resurgence of quarterback Baker Mayfield. With Mike Evans in the twilight of his career and Chris Godwin doubtful for the start of the season with an injury, Egbuka could establish an early role in this offence and be a sleeper bet at Canadian sportsbooks with current odds of +2800.
