Next Sutton Manager

Sitting bottom of the League Two table, it seemed only a matter of time until Sutton FC would lose their patience with manager, Matt Gray, but it took an 8-0 hammering by league-leaders Stockport, to put the final nail in the proverbial coffin. Despite having a slightly improved set of performances since the start of November, losing just 2 fixtures from 8, they sit 7 points from safety and will be firmly in the relegation zone at the end of the year. Having been with them since 2019, Gray has overseen their promotion from the National League, even leading them to 8th in the League Two division the subsequent year, but has failed to match these heroics ever since. As Sutton turn to Jason Goodliffe ahead of their game against Mansfield at Gander Green Lane, let’s take a look at who the bookies have as favourites to take over in the next Sutton United manager odds.

With five names on the list and no clear leaders at the time of writing, BetVictor have Steve Morison in 5th place. The current manager of Isthmian league side, Hornchurch, Morison’s odds of 10/1* would see a £10 bet payout £110. Tied in 3rd place, are the newly appointed interim manager Jason Goodliffe and Keith Curle, who was relieved by Hartlepool United in February earlier this year. Their odds of 8/1* would see a £10 wager return £90. In second place is Steve Cotterill at 6/1*, the former manager of Shrewsbury Town, where a £10 bet would pay £70, however he is already being touted for Plymouth and several other teams so he may be a difficult catch. Leading the pack, at current, is Mark Bonner, with odds of 5/1*, where a £10 wager would pay £60. The former coach of Cambridge United, despite a recent run of poor performances, oversaw their promotion to League One during his tenure. Having been released just 3 weeks ago, he could be a fantastic opportunity for Sutton United to try and get their season off to a better start and escape the relegation zone.

Whatever Sutton choose, their upcoming 2023 fixtures against Mansfield Town, AFC Wimbledon and Gillingham, the latter two both away from home, will require a quick resolution as to who is to take over the managerial position on a permanent basis. The board will have to act quick, however, to appease “The US” or “The Amber and Chocolates”, two affectionate nicknames for the club by their fans, as their bottom of the table position has led to many resounding boos in recent games. For now, it seems like the only thing to do is to wait and see who Chairman Bruce Ellis and the board choose to turn to, or keep an eye on the next manager odds to see which new names enter the fold in the race for the next Sutton United manager.
