Colchester Manager Odds: Ben Garner Sacked
After four successive defeats in the league and with only a single Football League Cup group win against Cambridge United to brag about, it won’t come as a shock to see that Colchester have parted ways with their manager, Ben Garner. While manager sackings aren’t as shocking as they used to be in the football leagues, this will be Colchester’s 5th sacking since Steve Ball in February 2021, not including the 4 caretaker manager spells between them, so whoever takes the helm next, will have an unprecedented weight of expectation on their shoulders from both the fans and the board.
So just what went wrong for Garner? Having only taken charge in March this year, his win ratio of 25.93% for the club, clearly shows that his managerial appointment did not work, and despite a series of unfortunate injuries in the 22/23 season, including the absences of Nico Lawrence and Fiacre Kelleher, his inability to turn round a lacklustre series of performances and currently languishing 23rd inside the relegation zone in League Two, with only Sutton United below them, left little to no choice for the Colchester board. So, with that in mind, just who might the U’s turn to next?
Colchester Manager Odds: Matthew Etherington on favourite 1/2
According to the BetVictor next Colchester manager odds, at the time of writing, there is a clear favourite in Matthew Etherington at 1/2, who is currently the Under 21-s lead coach at Colchester and would likely use this to his advantage. Also in the running is Neil Harris, Gillingham’s previous manager at 8/1, with Steve Cotterill, Shrewsbury’s previous manager, and Aidy Boothroyd, who was managing Indian Super League club Jamshedpur, both further afield at 12/1. While Etherington is clearly the bookies favourites, perhaps the experience required to end their bad run of form and constant cycling of new managers, may see Robbie Cowling, Colchester’s Chairman, choose someone with more than the three first team matches that Etherington had at Crawley Town.
Whoever the U’s turn to and whether the Colchester FC manager odds are a good indication or not, the team will be desperate to pull themselves out of the relegation zone and try, next season, to surpass their 6th position finish that they landed in the 2019/20 season, ultimately leading them into the playoffs and potentially help them achieve League One status.
