The NBA consists of 30 teams spread across the United States and Canada, and surprisingly, only one-third of them have never won an NBA championship. Currently, there are 10 teams still seeking their first NBA championship.
The most recent team to join the list of champions was the Denver Nuggets, who secured their first franchise championship during the 2022-23 season by defeating the Miami Heat. Nikola Jokic, the NBA Finals MVP, and standout point guard Jamal Murray were instrumental in this historic victory.
To win the NBA championship is an incredibly difficult achievement, and the 10 teams without one face a formidable challenge. Their struggles can affect their fan base and lead to reduced support. Let’s take a closer look at each of these teams that have yet to hoist The Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy.
Teams Without an NBA Championship in the Western Conference
Los Angeles Clippers
Starting in the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Clippers are one of the more disappointing franchises without a championship. Their closest shot came in the 2020-21 season, but they fell short in the Conference Finals against the Phoenix Suns. Throughout their history, critical injuries have plagued them during crucial stretches of the season.
Luck plays a significant role in winning the NBA Finals, but the Clippers have struggled to maintain good health. Their challenge is compounded by sharing the Crypto.com Arena with the 17-time champion Los Angeles Lakers, whose championship banners adorn the rafters.
Memphis Grizzlies
Moving on, the Memphis Grizzlies, another Western Conference franchise, have never claimed an NBA title. They currently boast a talented roster led by superstar Ja Morant and NBA Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr. Despite their potential, the team hasn’t advanced beyond the Conference Semifinals.
Their last appearance in the Conference Finals was in the 2012-23 season. The passionate Memphis fanbase hopes for a change in the team’s historical trajectory.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Continuing out west, the Minnesota Timberwolves are the next team without an NBA Championship. Kevin Garnett is undoubtedly a first-ballot Hall of Famer, but during his time with the team in the late 1990s, they faced tough competition in the Western Conference.
As currently constructed, Minnesota possesses superstar talent in Anthony Edwards and Karl Anthony Towns. However, as a franchise, they haven’t reached the Conference Finals in the past two decades.
New Orleans Pelicans
Next, we have the New Orleans Pelicans, formerly known as the New Orleans Hornets. The Pelicans have a reprieve to some extent, considering they’re an expansion team with only 35 years of existence. Nevertheless, in the last two decades, they haven’t reached the Conference Finals, and they’ve only made it to the Conference Semifinals twice in the past 16 years, despite having a roster of superstar talent.
Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz
The Phoenix Suns and Utah Jazz complete the list of Western Conference teams that have never won a championship. Both had Hall of Fame talent in the mid-1990s, including Charles Barkley, John Stockton, and Karl Malone, but they fell short against strong competition.
It’s worth noting that the Chicago Bulls, led by Michael Jordan, dominated with six NBA titles in eight years during the 1990s, limiting opportunities for other teams. The Suns and Jazz were top contenders during that era.
Teams Without an NBA Championship in the Eastern Conference
In the Eastern Conference, four teams have yet to secure an NBA Championship:
Orlando Magic
The Orlando Magic have made significant strides in the NBA draft, acquiring Hall of Famers Shaquille O’Neal and Dwight Howard as No. 1 overall picks.
Unlike most teams on this list, the Magic have competed in the NBA Finals. However, during the 2008-09 season, Orlando suffered a loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Indiana Pacers
The Indiana Pacers, also in the Eastern Conference, have made it to the NBA Finals but have fallen short of clinching the title. In the 1999-2000 season, the Pacers were defeated by the Lakers and have not returned to the Finals since. The Pacers, often considered a small market team, have faced challenges in consistently attracting superstar talent.
Charlotte Hornets
The Charlotte Hornets, formerly known as the Charlotte Bobcats for a few years, remain an expansion team without a championship ring. In their 35-year existence, the Hornets have reached the Conference Semifinals only four times, never advancing to a Conference Finals or NBA Finals.
Hindered by injuries and questionable draft choices, the Hornets have faced organizational challenges. To position themselves for an NBA Championship, they will require substantial assistance in recruiting top-tier talent along with exceptional coaching.
Brooklyn Nets
Last but certainly not least, the Brooklyn Nets. Originally located in New Jersey, the Nets made back-to-back appearances in the NBA Finals with Hall of Famer Jason Kidd leading the team at point guard during the early 2000s.
Since then, Brooklyn has failed to progress beyond the Conference Semifinals, despite adding Hall of Fame talents like Kevin Durant, Paul Pierce, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden. Things haven’t gone entirely in the Nets’ favour. To establish themselves as contenders in the future, they will need to secure more Hall of Fame talent to complement current All-Star Mikal Bridges.
