Crosby’s last-ditch winner takes gold
With so many iconic moments taking place in stadiums all around Canada over the years, BetVictor wanted to know which one was the nation’s favourite. Finding eight of the most viewed moments on YouTube, we polled over 1,000 Canadians to discover the nation’s most iconic stadium event.
The results show that Sidney Crosby’s winning goal in the 2010 Winter Olympics gold medal game is the most iconic stadium moment, earning 36% of the overall vote. Crosby’s golden goal against the United States put Canada back on top of the Ice Hockey world after disappointment at the 2006 Winter Games in Italy.
Crosby’s goal was closely followed by the Toronto Raptors winning the NBA in 2019, the fan zone in Jurassic Park was a sight to behold as the event took place in California. Rounding off our top three stadium moments is Joe Carter’s championship-winning three-run walk-off home run in the Baseball Championships at what was formerly the Skydome (now the Rogers Centre) in Toronto, all the way back in 1993.

Does home advantage really count for something in Canada?
Home city bias was evident amongst those polled, as residents of cities tended to favour moments in their local area. Over 60% of people from Vancouver voted Crosby securing Team Canada Ice Hockey gold as their top stadium moment; almost double the national average.
Almost half of Toronto residents’ most iconic moment is of course their local basketball team Toronto Raptors bringing home the 2019 NBA Championship. The celebrations in Jurassic Park could almost be heard in California where the Raptors roster secured the championship.
Controversially, locals in Montreal didn’t show much nostalgia for their Olympic Opening Ceremony in 1976, which was hosted at an incomplete Olympic Stadium. Their memories may be marred by the controversy surrounding the Olympic Games that summer, as only 21% of those polled chose it as their most iconic moment.
Perhaps surprisingly, there appear to be plenty of Raptors fans in Montreal. Overall, 17% of its residents opted for the Raptors winning the NBA Championship as their most iconic stadium moment of all time.

Ali and Gretzky surprisingly low
Boxing fans may be surprised to see the iconic Muhammad Ali vs George Chuvalo fight at the bottom of the list, receiving only 2% of the vote.
The infamous bout for the World Heavyweight title in 1966 led Ali to claim that Chuvalo was ‘the toughest guy he ever fought’, but modern-day Canadians opted for more recent moments as their favourites. Two of the top three moments in the list occurred between 2010 and the present day, and third-placed moment, Joe Carter’s winning home-run, was just over 30 years ago.
Wayne Gretzky’s winning goal in the Canada Cup in 1967 is the closest to breaking the top three, narrowly missing on third spot by just 1% of the vote. This iconic moment was most popular with residents in Edmonton, receiving 22% of their vote, possibly due to Gretzky playing for the Edmonton Oilers for almost a decade.
