Eurovision Song Contest – An Overview

eurovision scores

The famed Eurovision Song Contest is globally recognised as the pinnacle of music competitions. Starting in 1956, we’ve seen sixty-seven contests and countless live performances. With these competitions, some countries have consistently outshone others.

Winning Eurovision is a major feat. As you’ll see, some countries didn’t just win but attained the highest Eurovision scores ever. Some nations have clinched the highest number of victories, while others often wind up at the bottom of the list. Eurovision is a rollercoaster of triumphs and trials that shifts as the years roll on.

Who Has Won The Eurovision Song Contest The Most?

In 2023, Sweden’s victory with Loreen’s “Tattoo” brought their Eurovision wins to a total of seven. Sweden first tasted victory with ABBA in 1974, followed by wins in 1984, 1991, 1999, 2012, 2015, and 2023. Now, Sweden has to outperform Ireland, another seven-time winner, in the Eurovision contest.

Let’s rewind to 1996, the last year Ireland clinched a win in the Eurovision Song Contest. But, did you know? They hold the record for most wins alongside Sweden. The journey began in 1970 with Dana’s All Kinds of Everything. Further wins followed in 1980, 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, and finally, in 1996. Evidently, Ireland was a powerhouse from the late 80s to the early 90s, bagging three straight victories. Until now, no other country has echoed this feat.

Who Has Finished Last In The Eurovision The Most?

You might quickly guess it’s the United Kingdom. But surprisingly, it’s Norway that’s finished last the most times. Contrary to what most thought, they’ve taken the bottom spot more than any other nation. However, there’s a bright side to this story as well.

Norway have finished in last place at the Eurovision a record eleven times – 1963, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1981, 1990, 1997, 2001, 2004, and 2012. On four occasions, they scored a flat zero or “nul points.” Interestingly, they’ve secured a last-place finish in every decade since the 1960s.

But it’s not all grim for Norway. They’ve been unsuccessful in qualifying for the finals only three  times but have tasted victory three times as well – 1985, 1995, and 2009. Their 2009 triumph was a record-breaker, with the largest winning gap in the Contest’s history.
