The Greatest Canadian Drivers in F1 History

Best Canadian F1 Drivers

Canada is known for producing some of the best athletes in the world. Of course, Canada has produced some of the best hockey players in history. But there are plenty of Canadian athletes in other sports as well, including the reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. With this in mind, we take a look at some of the greatest F1 drivers that Canada has ever produced.

Greatest Canadian F1 Drivers

Since we are talking about the Canadian Grand Prix, it seems only fitting to discuss some of the best Canadian Formula One drivers in the history of the sport. In F1 history, there have only been 15 Canadian drivers and only four of whom have scored points on the Formula One circuit.

Gilles Villeneuve

The name Villeneuve is a legendary one when it comes to Canadian F1 racing. Gilles was born in January 1950 in Quebec, Canada and started his racing career in 1973 at the regional Formula Ford Championship. He joined the F1 circuit in 1977 with the McLaren Team at the 1977 British Grand Prix.

Gilles Villeneuve would go on to win six Grand Prix in Formula One, including being the only Canadian driver to win the Canadian Grand Prix in 1978. He would go on to compete in 67 Grand Prix in his career, reaching the podium 13 times for both the McLaren and Ferrari Teams.

Villeneuve’s Formula One and racing career came to a tragic end in 1982, when he was involved in a fatal crash during the final qualifying session at the Belgian Grand Prix. As he was trying to pass another car, he clipped the back and had his car sent flying through the air at a speed of more than 200 km/hr. The track name for the Canadian Grand Prix was changed to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in his honour, and at the start and finish line, there is a permanent sign that reads “Salut Gilles”.

Jacques Villeneuve

Jacques is the only son of Gilles Villeneuve and was an active Formula One racer between 1996 and 2006. He is widely considered the most successful Canadian Formula One driver, with eleven race victories and 23 podium finishes across 165 total races. Jacques Villeneuve drove for various teams, including BMW Sauber, Renault, Williams, and BAR.

After retiring from Formula One in 2006, Villeneuve tried other forms of racing, including NASCAR and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He is a member of the Canada Sports Hall of Fame and won various Canadian athletic honours, including the Lou Marsh Trophy and the Lionel Conacher Award. Villeneuve was named after his father’s brother, Jacques-Joseph Villeneuve, who was also a Formula One racer for part of his career.

Allen Berg

Berg was a Canadian Formula One driver in the 1980s who raced for the now-defunct Osella Team. He was born in August 1961 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and got his start racing go-karts before joining the Formula Atlantic circuit at age 20. Berg raced in nine Formula One races, but failed to win or finish on the podium in any of them.

The 63-year-old is still active in the racing community. Berg runs the Allen Berg Racing School in Monterey, California, for beginner drivers with little or no experience.

Lance Stroll

Stroll is the only active Canadian Formula One driver and has competed on the circuit since 2017. The Montreal, Quebec, native drives for the Aston Martin racing team, which is owned by his father, the billionaire businessman Lawrence Stroll. The young Stroll has raced in Formula One since 2017 and has participated in 178 races, finishing on the podium three times during that period.

Which Driver Has Won the Most Canadian Grand Prix Races?

In the 64-year history of the Canadian Grand Prix, there have been several drivers who have won the race multiple times. At the top of that list are a pair of F1 legends: German racer Michael Schumacher and British racer Lewis Hamilton. Both drivers have won the Canadian Grand Prix a record seven times in their respective careers.

After Schumacher and Hamilton, a pair of drivers have won the race on three different occasions. Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet won the Canadian Grand Prix in 1982, 1984, and 1991, while Dutch driver Max Verstappen has won the last three Canadian GP races. Verstappen joins Schumacher and Hamilton as the only F1 drivers in history to win the Canadian Grand Prix in three consecutive years.

Verstappen has dominated the Canadian Grand Prix in recent years and is widely considered one of the best F1 drivers in the world today. The young Dutch driver came first in the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship Titles from 2021 to 2024, and has won a total of 65 races in his eleven seasons of racing.
