Early favourites for the tournament having got to the finals in 2020, England made it through the Group tables with a largely underwhelming single victory, and all but didn’t make it through the Round of 16, save for a bicycle kick by Bellingham and an early AET goal by lead striker Harry Kane. Having never won the Euros but having competed in every one since 1988, save for a single 2008 mishap, they will be hoping to liven up in the Quarter Finals and, at last, find a way to get their hands on the much coveted title.
Manager Gareth Southgate has had his share of pessimists to deal with this tournament, not least due to some questionable substitutions, but he’ll be hoping that the country’s leading scorer, Harry Kane, with the support of Bellingham and the young Kobbie Mainoo, will finally begin to gel together and improve upon recent performances, as they take on a team that just knocked out the defending Champions, Italy.
Switzerland Football Team
A single loss in 2023 and undefeated in 2024, Switzerland are fast emerging as underdogs in the Euros having knocked out Champions Italy in the Round of 16. A 3-1 victory against Hungary was followed by two draws against Scotland and Germany, with the last game against the Italian side being the crown jewel on their path to the Quarter Finals so far, a place where they have only once made it to before and one where they have never made it past.
With their manager Murat Yakin, fortunate to have depth in his squad, having scored 6 goals to date and all by different players, not to mention being able to call once again on Silvan Widmer as he returns from his suspension, confidence will no doubt be building within the team as they prepare to face a side that has underwhelmed in their performances from the get-go.
