England Football Team
Euro 2020 runners up and arguably one of the teams who has qualified the most times but never lifted the silverware, England made it through to the Round of 16 topping their table, albeit with a paltry 5 points and just two goals scored. A win against Serbia was followed by two draws against Denmark and Slovenia, after a run of less than convincing performances have left many wondering how England are still favourites to win the tournament with the bookies.
Having made it to the Quarter Finals or further in their last two world cups and Euro tournament, between 2018-2022, England will be hoping to find some momentum under manager Gareth Southgate and rediscover their goalscoring abilities under lead striker and the country’s highest ever scorer, Harry Kane.
Slovakia Football Team
Their third successive Euros qualified for and having never made it past the Round of 16 as Slovakia, their 2024 story so far saw them qualify third after beating Belgium, losing to Ukraine and then drawing with Romania, yet finishing with the same number of points as all four teams in Group E. Just 2 goals separated them from 1st place in fact, but with their country’s all-time leading goalscorer retiring last year, they will hope to muster up what it takes to challenge their opponents on the day.
With coach Francesco Calzona concurrently managing Napoli alongside the national team, and with Napoli failing to qualify for European football, the Slovaks will be hoping that his attention is wholly on the Euros as they go head to head with the former tournament favourites.
H2H Record
With the teams having faced off 6 times before and England having won 5 of them, with only a single draw in 2016 to stop a clean sweep, England should expect to have the upper hand here, against a side that have had far less experience in the competition than themselves.
Round of 16 Match Prediction
While the sides get ready to meet on the 30th June at 17:00, a quick glance at the latest Euro 2024 betting odds at BetVictor, at the time of writing, have England way out in front with odds of just 4/11*, meaning a £10 bet would pay just £13.64 if correct, while Slovakia’s price of 8/1, would see the same £10 wager returning £90 if they were ahead at the time of the final whistle.
For anyone expecting to see a draw, current market odds of 16/5* would pay £42 off a £10 stake, not too shabby considering both these sides last performances. While England are, if not surprisingly, the favourites to lift the Euro 2024 trophy in Germany, Slovakia are way out in 14th place, so we predict that even with such a slow start to the competition, the English will do what it takes on the night to walk away with all three points and qualify for the Quarter Finals again.
