EFL Preview 29/08

EFL Preview

We’re into Matchday 4 in the Championship and Matchday 6 in League One and League Two. Even at this early stage, things are starting to take shape, and you could say it’s known which teams are in for a good campaign and who could find themselves struggling this term. With a chance for teams to cement their position at the right end of the table and an opportunity for others to get their season going, here’s the pick of the action. You can get involved at BetVictor sports betting.

Championship

Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United

What a game it could turn out to be at lunchtime on Saturday. High-flying Boro are taking on a Sheffield United side that has lost every game so far this season under new manager Ruben Selles. The Blades desperately need to get points on the board, but Boro, under Rob Edwards, will be out to add another win to their collection, and they probably get it.

Stoke City vs West Brom

Stoke City, like Middlesbrough, have won all their games in the Championship so far in 2025/26, but that could change Saturday in another early kick-off as they come up against unbeaten West Brom, who have two wins and a draw to their name. Stoke will fancy their chances, but the Baggies could prove a difficult nut to crack.

Oxford United vs Coventry City

It’s been a terrible start to the new campaign for Oxford United. They’ve lost all three games so far, so it’s not the best time to welcome free-scoring Coventry City, especially after just losing 6-0 in the Carabao Cup at home to Brighton. Expect more goals in this one, and they will more than likely be coming from the away side.

League One

Barnsley vs Huddersfield Town

Barnsley vs Huddersfield Town is a Yorkshire derby at the right end of the League One table. The home team are 6th on 10 points and in striking distance of the Terriers, who are 2nd on 12. While Lee Grant’s side have been going along very well this term, the Tykes may see this as an opportunity to make a statement in front of their own fans.

Bradford City vs AFC Wimbledon

Bradford City vs AFC Wimbledon is a match between two of the newly promoted sides, and they both happen to be doing great so far. Bradford are 4th, on 11 points, and unbeaten, while AFC Wimbledon are 10th on 9 points. You’d fancy the Bantams in this one, but the Dons know them better than most, so they could get a result.

Reading vs Port Vale

Reading and Port Vale will be disappointed with how they’ve started the new season. They’ve both drawn 2 and lost 3, and are both winless. They start the game in the bottom four and will be eager to get a win on the board. Vale will be buoyed by their midweek win at Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup, but it might not be enough to win.

League Two

Crewe Alexandra vs Swindon Town

Crewe Alexandra are the current league leaders, having won 4 and lost 1. They’ve scored 10 goals across 5 games, conceding just 3. They host another team capable of scoring goals this weekend in Swindon Town, with Ian Holloway’s side 8th with  3 wins and 2 defeats to their name. Expect goals in this one.

MK Dons vs Walsall

MK Dons, the early-season favourites to win League Two, continue to flatter to deceive despite being 3rd and unbeaten. They welcome a Walsall side who are 5th, having won 3 and lost 2, in what will be a stern test. Walsall are capable of beating MK Dons if they’re not on their game, which in turn could see them come to life finally.

Oldham Athletic vs Gillingham

Oldham are winless so far, but they’ve registered 4 draws, which is quite something. It shows they’re difficult to beat. They welcome Gillingham on Saturday, a team on a long unbeaten run, who are 5th in the league on 11 points. While many will expect this to be a straightforward win for Gareth Ainsworth’s side, Oldham will have other ideas.
