The Saskatchewan Roughriders are the fourth-oldest professional football team in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Established in 1910, there’s well over a century of CFL history with the Riders, who play their games at the Mosaic Stadium in Regina. The four-time Grey Cup winners are also North America’s oldest major league sports franchise that’s community-owned.

This page shines a spotlight on the Saskatchewan Roughriders players who have donned the Green and White in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

2023/24 Roughriders CFL Season Overview

It proved to be a very difficult 2023 CFL season for the Roughriders. They finished second bottom of the West Division, with a 33% win rate. In fact, they went on to finish the 2023 season with a seven-game losing streak.

They also finished with the highest points against tally (551), 48 higher than bottom team Edmonton Elks.

It’s a real source of frustration for Roughriders fans, especially as Saskatchewan had won six of their first 13 games, including a 32-30 overtime win over eventual division winners, Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

However, the Blue Bombers got their revenge six days later, hammering the Sask Riders roster 51-6, sparking an almighty collapse in form and confidence.

Roughriders Roster 2024/25

The 2024/25 CFL season promises to be a fascinating one for Roughriders fans. The Sask Riders roster is likely to changed given that there’s a new head coach at the helm.

Former head coach Craig Dickenson departed Saskatchewan at the end of his contract. Corey Mace secured his first head coach role in the CFL after spending time with Calgary Stampedes and Toronto Argonauts as defensive line coach and defensive coordinator respectively.

It was a busy offseason for the Riders’ general manager Jeremy O’Day, who worked hard to tie down some of their key defensive players.

Defensive back Amari Henderson and defensive tackle Miles Brown have secured new deals ahead of February when free agency opens for all CFL franchises.

Powerful running back Frankie Hickson has also re-sign in the Sask Riders roster for the 2024 season. The 2024 CFL Draft will obviously be an interesting talking point for Riders fans, as they seek to find more up-and-coming talent to add to their roster.

The number-one prospect looks set to be quarterback Kurtis Rourke, followed by offensive lineman Gabe Wallace.

The Roughriders have the third pick in round one of the draft. It means they’ll have a strong pick of talented offensive linemen or even Rourke if the quarterback is untouched by the Edmonton Elks or the Ottawa Redblacks.

Saskatchewan Roughriders History and Titles

Saskatchewan Roughriders are one of the oldest but least decorated franchises in the CFL. Despite their long history in the CFL, they’ve only managed four Grey Cup victories in 19 appearances in the Grey Cup Final, one of Canada’s largest annual televised sporting events.

The Riders’ last Grey Cup success came in 2013, comfortably strolling to a 45-23 victory in the 101st Grey Cup against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

It just so happened that the final was being staged at the Roughriders’ home stadium, the Mosaic Stadium, with a crowd of almost 45,000 sent into raptures.

Six years prior to this Grey Cup triumph, the Roughriders were victorious again. In the 95th Grey Cup Final, the Riders narrowly edged out the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 23-19, with over three million viewers on CBC television tuning in.

Grey Cup wins for the Roughriders had been few and far between prior to 2007. In 1989, Dave Ridgway’s dramatic field-goal proved to be the only difference between Saskatchewan and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats once again, winning 43-40 at Toronto’s SkyDome.

The inaugural Grey Cup triumph of the Sask Riders roster came in 1966. They overcame the Ottawa Rough Riders to win the trophy for the first time after eight failed attempts prior to the 1966 CFL season.
