Just 7 games into the season and 10 into Manchester United’s campaign, their impressive end to the 2022/23 season has already been undone by a catalogue of errors. With 2 out of 2 losses in their Champions League campaign and 3 losses from 6 games in the Premier League, it seems that their problems are just getting worse.
After long-standing goalkeeper David De Gea was released under less than ideal circumstances in the Summer, the new signing Onana was portrayed as a steady pair of hands to calm a leaky defence. Unfortunately, after a series of costly errors, most recently against Galatasaray at Old Trafford, many fans are already calling for him to be benched and ten Hag to find a replacement. This, coupled with a larger than normal number of defensive absences, have meant that United have conceded three goals or more in over 3 games so far, their first time since 1978.
Just how long will it take for the fans, who are so passionately calling for the Glazers to sell and leave the club, to turn their attention to the manager, ten Hag, who’s team selections and performances have been lacklustre at best. While the manager was adamant that he had the support of the board as recently as this week, it can only be a matter of time before the Glazers, eager to offset the negative attention they are receiving, could look to leverage this to assign blame to someone other than themselves.
According to the BetVictor Manager odds, at the time of writing, Erik ten Hag is the second most popular manager behind Sheffield United’s Paul Heckingbottom, at 4/1 to be replaced. While this may change if they perform this weekend against Brentford, the chances are that another loss may prove an all too costly feather in the hat for the struggling manager, leading to an almost certain heating up of the next Manchester United manager odds and betting markets.
