Austria Football Team
With just a single qualifying defeat and attending the Euros for the 4th time in their history, Austria were drawn in the Group D – aka ‘Group of Death’ – yet amazed everyone by topping the table against the highest standing European men’s team according to FIFA, France. Despite losing their opening group game against France by a goal to nil, follow-on victories against Poland and then Netherlands left them on 6 points, 1 point above the French and 2 above the Dutch. With 6 different goal scorers so far, can they strike early and make it through to the Quarter-Finals.
With Ralf Rangnick having taken charge in 2022, he will have had plenty of time to work with captain Marcel Sabitzer and leading striker Marko Arnautović, and will be hopeful of a repeat of their friendly match with Turkey back in March where they stormed to a huge 6-1 victory on home turf in Vienna.
Turkey Football Team
After a rather upsetting 2024, where they had lost three games and drawn one, Turkey were entering the Euros for the 6th time having not been able to replicate their 2008 semi-finals position and dropping out in the Group stages for the past two tournaments. Fortunately, they can at least be proud that their Group stages hasn’t been impacted with the same run of bad luck. A 3-1 win against Georgia was partially undone by a 3-0 loss to Portugal, but a third-game win against Czechia left them 2nd in the table on 6 points, separated only by goal difference from leaders Portugal.
Their coach, Vincenzo Montella, having only been appointed last year, is managing the youngest team at the Euros and has a hard task against Austria with their captain suspended alongside defender Akaydin, so will have to rely on vice-captain Kaan Ayhan and top scorer Cenk Tosun, who’s last minute goal helped them beat Czechia, to defeat an Austrian side in strong form.

Having played 17 games against each other and with Austria having won 9 and Turkey winning just 7, albeit including 5 of their last 8 games, perhaps the most notable fact is that there has only ever been a single draw between these two sides.
