Next Rotherham Manager Odds And Leading Contenders To Replace Matt Hamshaw

With Matt Hamshaw relieved of his duties, the next Rotherham manager odds and leading contenders have been released here on BetVictor. Hamshaw was given his P45 following on from the Millers 5-0 drubbing against Peterborough on March 17.

That result leaves the League One strugglers six points adrift of safety. With less than ten games remaining of the 2025-26 campaign, the club have decided a change was necessary to help avoid dropping into the fourth tier for the first time in 13 years. But who could fill the void?

A number of candidates have been identified in the next Rotherham manager odds. Interestingly, this will be the fifth permanent manager the South Yorkshire side have employed since 2022 so they’ll need to choose wisely. Here at BetVictor News, we take a closer look at the leading contenders and also identify a number of former England stars who are also in the mix.

Next Rotherham Manager Odds: Darren Ferguson Heads The Betting

The early 2/1 favourite is former Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson. The son of Sir Alex has overseen four separate spells at London Road. He earned promotion four times across his tenures and was last in the dugout in October 2025.

Although the most recent stint ended in disappointment, he is widely regarded as a club legend. Having managed almost 900 games, a switch to Rotherham may be his next venture. Nonetheless, a relegation scrap at the business end of the season perhaps wasn’t on Ferguson’s agenda.

With that said, the 54-year-old could be tempted by the challenge to keep the Millers up. He would certainly earn legendary status at the New York Stadium and so far, he leads the betting in the next Rotherham manager odds.

Richard Wood, Darren Moore And David Artell Considered By Rotherham?

A trio of other leading contenders include Richard Wood, Darren Moore and David Artell. The former only retired from the professional game last May. He is currently a first-team coach at the New York Stadium. It appears that Wood will not follow Matt Hamshaw out the door and can be backed at 4/1 to replace Hamshaw directly.

He would be the straight-forward appointment but his lack of direct experience in the dugout perhaps isn’t what Rotherham seek right now. That is where a name like Moore appeals. Having been sacked from Port Vale in December after leading the Valiants to League One promotion last term, Moore could be the man to save the Millers owing to his EFL familiarity.

Moore has managed the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield, West Brom, Doncaster and Vale. The 51-year-old can be backed at 6/1 with Rotherham-born former Grimbsy and Crewe boss Steve Artell available at 8/1.

Could Wayne Rooney Be The Next Rotherham Manager?

Unsurprisingly, the next Rotherham manager odds include a number of viable candidates for the role. However, there are a number of long-shots which include former England captain Wayne Rooney. The ex-Derby, Plymouth and Birmingham boss is currently priced at 25/1.

Despite struggling in his managerial career, Rooney does offer EFL experience. But his Birmingham and Plymouth dismissals don’t bode well from the Millers perspective. Especially as they have a race against time to preserve their League One status. Making it hard to imagine Rooney being a genuine consideration.

Others include the likes of Steve Bruce (16/1), David Dunn (20/1), Leighton Baines (20/1) and Paul Ince (25/1). The latter was last in the dugout three years ago with Reading. Ince does offer a wealth of experience but his time away from the touchline could prove a stumbling block.
