The 2023-24 NFL season has already seen multiple head coach firings, with several other bench bosses still on the hot seat. Who will be the next casualty? Read on to learn about which NFL head coaches could be fired next, and for everything else you need to know about NFL coach to be fired odds.
Josh McDaniels First NFL Head Coach To Be Fired
Earlier this season, things quickly went from bad-to-worse for the Las Vegas Raiders. Team owner Mark Davis has previously assured Josh McDaniels (former head coach) and Dave Ziegler (former general manager) that they would return in 2024, but that wasn’t the case.
On November 1st 2023, both McDaniels and Ziegler were shown the door. The Raiders were 3-5 at the time and McDaniels had completely lost the room. Since then, two other head coaches have gotten the boot with several other NFL coaches still on the hot seat.
But who will be the next NFL coach to be fired?
Next NFL Head Coach To Be Fired
There are a lot of underperforming NFL teams this season, including a handful that were supposed to contend for division titles and playoff appearances. These next few weeks will be critical for many of the league’s premier bench bosses, but which NFL coaches are actually on the hot seat?
Ron Rivera of the Washington Commanders
It’s hard to think of NFL coaches on the hot seat without thinking of Ron Rivera. After a surprising 2-0 start to the season, the Washington Commanders dropped 10 of the next 12 games and have generally been underwhelming.
Big changes are needed in Washington, and that often starts with the head coach. At this point, Rivera seems like the most obvious choice to be the next NFL head coach to be fired.
Robert Saleh of the New York Jets
Robert Saleh’s tenure as the New York Jets head coach has been tumultuous at best. Currently in year three of a five-year contract, the team has a 16-32 record during that span and is now mathematically eliminated from this year’s playoffs.
A season-ending injury to future hall-of-fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the first game of the season certainly didn’t help, but Saleh’s misfortunes with this team began well before that and don’t seem to be going away any time soon. Unless he’s fired, of course.
Matt Eberflus of the Chicago Bears
Now in his second year as Chicago Bears head coach, Matt Eberflus has been under fire lately. With just eight wins in 31 games since Eberflus took over, the franchise is desperate for answers.
The nature of some of these losses is what hurts the most. On three separate occasions this season, the Bears lost despite leading by double-digit points entering the fourth quarter. Confidence in Eberflus is dwindling fast, and his seat is the hottest it’s been since he took the job.
Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers
Mike Tomlin’s career with the Pittsburgh Steelers has been long and well-documented. He was named head coach all the way back in 2007, and it finally might be time for a change. Sacking Tomlin would shock the league, but the Steelers are running out of options. Especially if they miss the playoffs.
Betting Tips for Next NFL Coach To Be Fired
What should you be looking out for when placing bets on the next NFL coach to be fired? Read below for some tips and tricks that can help you make a well-informed choice.
Team Record
This may seem obvious, but looking at a team’s overall record is always a great indicator of where the head coach currently stands with the franchise. Some coaches have more leash than others, especially those who took over during a rebuilding period.
But at the end of the day, the NFL is a cutthroat business, and no one’s job is permanently safe if poor performances persist.
Current Team Narrative
Statistics are helpful, but they also don’t tell the full story. The narratives surrounding a team can reveal a lot about an organization as a whole.
For example, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell took over ahead of the 2021 season. The Lions record through the first 11 games was 0-10-1, and ended up being 3-13-1 on the year.
Despite this, there were a lot of positives to draw from the team in terms of improved play, thus the general narrative surrounding Campbell and the Lions remained positive.
In short, Campbell took over an abysmal team and did the best with what he had, which was the goal and kept his job safe despite only winning three games.
