Winning a UFC title puts a fighter at the top of the sport. Staying there is usually much harder.
Every defence brings somebody new. A different style, a different problem and another challenger who has spent months preparing specifically to take the belt away.
Very few champions keep winning once that target is on their back.
As of September 2026, Jon Jones has the most successful UFC title defences across a career with 12. Demetrious Johnson holds a slightly different record, completing 11 consecutive title defences during one uninterrupted reign as flyweight champion.

What Counts as a UFC Title Defence?
Winning the belt itself does not count as a defence.
A fighter must already be champion and then successfully retain the title against another challenger.
That distinction becomes important with Jon Jones.
Jones has 12 successful defences across separate championship reigns and two divisions. Johnson’s 11 all came one after another during the same flyweight reign.
So Jones leads the overall list, while Johnson owns the consecutive record.
1. Jon Jones: 12 UFC Title Defences
Jon Jones became the youngest champion in UFC history when he beat Mauricio Rua for the light heavyweight belt in 2011. He was just 23.
What followed was an extraordinary run through one of the promotion’s strongest divisions.
Jones defended the belt eight times during his first reign, beating Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, Vitor Belfort, Chael Sonnen, Alexander Gustafsson, Glover Teixeira and Daniel Cormier.
After eventually returning to the throne, he added another three defences against Anthony Smith, Thiago Santos and Dominick Reyes.
Then came heavyweight.
Jones submitted Ciryl Gane to win the vacant heavyweight belt in 2023 before stopping former champion Stipe Miocic in his first defence.
That took his career total to 12.
His championship runs were interrupted, so he never put together the longest continuous sequence. In terms of successful UFC title defences across an entire career, however, nobody has more.
2. Demetrious Johnson: 11 UFC Title Defences
Demetrious Johnson owns one of those records that becomes more impressive the longer you think about it.
He became the UFC’s first flyweight champion in 2012 and then successfully defended that belt 11 straight times.
Joseph Benavidez, John Dodson, Henry Cejudo, Kyoji Horiguchi and Ray Borg were among the challengers who tried to end the run.
Johnson kept finding answers.
Sometimes he comfortably controlled fights over five rounds. Other times he produced something spectacular, including the famous flying armbar against Borg.
That victory was his 11th defence and moved him beyond Anderson Silva’s previous record of 10.
Henry Cejudo finally ended Johnson’s reign by split decision in 2018. The record has survived ever since.
3. Anderson Silva: 10 UFC Title Defences
Before Johnson came along, Anderson Silva’s 10 looked almost impossible to catch.
Silva took the middleweight championship from Rich Franklin in 2006 and kept it for close to seven years.
Dan Henderson, Chael Sonnen, Vitor Belfort and Demian Maia were among the fighters he beat during the reign. Not every defence was easy either.
Sonnen controlled huge portions of their first fight before Silva caught him in a triangle armbar late in the fifth round. It was the sort of win that summed up his championship years. Even when the fight was going badly, Silva remained dangerous enough to change everything.
Chris Weidman eventually knocked him out in 2013.

Joint 4. Georges St-Pierre: 9 UFC Title Defences
Georges St-Pierre’s first championship reign did not last long.
Matt Serra stunned him in one of the biggest upsets in UFC history in 2007.
What GSP did afterwards matters far more.
He regained the welterweight title and successfully defended it nine times, beating the likes of BJ Penn, Thiago Alves, Carlos Condit, Nick Diaz and Johny Hendricks.
St-Pierre became incredibly difficult to solve. His wrestling was elite, but what really separated him was his ability to build a game plan around whoever stood opposite him.
He later returned after four years away and submitted Michael Bisping to become middleweight champion.
GSP never defended that second belt, leaving his career total at nine.
Joint 4. Valentina Shevchenko: 9 UFC Title Defences
Valentina Shevchenko now sits alongside St-Pierre with nine successful title defences.
Seven came during her first spell as women’s flyweight champion.
Jessica Eye, Katlyn Chookagian, Jéssica Andrade and Taila Santos were among the challengers who failed to take the belt before Alexa Grasso eventually submitted Shevchenko in 2023.
She then reclaimed the championship and started building again.
Successful defences against Manon Fiorot and Zhang Weili pushed her career total to nine, putting Shevchenko among the leading champions in UFC history.
Which Other Fighters Have the Most UFC Title Defences?
The numbers remain impressive below the top five.
Amanda Nunes, José Aldo and Matt Hughes each recorded seven successful UFC title defences.
Nunes managed hers across two divisions, defending both bantamweight and featherweight gold during her career.
Aldo made seven UFC featherweight defences after already establishing himself as the dominant 145lb fighter in the WEC.
Hughes reached seven across two welterweight championship reigns before St-Pierre eventually took control of the division.
Ronda Rousey and Alexander Volkanovski have six.
Rousey’s reign was especially destructive. Five of her six women’s bantamweight title defences ended in the opening round.
Volkanovski made five defences during his first featherweight reign before losing the belt to Ilia Topuria. After later becoming champion again, another victory over Diego Lopes moved his overall total to six.
Just below them are Israel Adesanya, Kamaru Usman, Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Tito Ortiz, who each made five successful defences.

Who Has the Most Consecutive UFC Title Defences?
This is the easiest part to get confused.
Demetrious Johnson holds the record with 11 consecutive UFC title defences.
Anderson Silva managed 10 straight, while Georges St-Pierre recorded nine during his second welterweight reign.
Jon Jones has more successful defences across his entire career, but his reigns were interrupted. His best uninterrupted run was eight.
So there are really two records:
- Most UFC title defences overall: Jon Jones, 12
- Most consecutive UFC title defences: Demetrious Johnson, 11
That distinction is important whenever the two are compared.
Can the UFC Title Defence Record Be Broken?
Eventually, yes. It will not be easy.
Getting to 11 or 12 requires far more than becoming the best fighter in a division.
A champion has to stay healthy, active and motivated while repeatedly facing the strongest contenders available. One night where the timing is slightly off can wipe out years of progress.
Even five successful defences puts a fighter in rare company.
That is why Johnson’s uninterrupted run still stands out so much, and why Jones accumulating 12 across different stages of his career is unlikely to be matched quickly.
