England’s Head-To-Head Record Against Mexico: History Favours Three Lions

Ahead of Monday’s crunch 2026 World Cup Round of 16 clash, BetVictor News takes a closer look at the Mexico vs England H2H record.

The Three Lions survived their DR Congo test on Wednesday after Harry Kane’s brilliant brace cancelled out Brian Cipenga’s first-half opener in Atlanta. That 2-1 victory has paired Thomas Tuchel’s side with the co-hosts who boast a 100% win record and are yet to concede.

El Tri beat World Cup dark horses Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32 thanks to goals from Julian Quinones and former Premier League star Raul Jimenez. Under the guidance of Javier Aguirre, the Mexicans will provide England their toughest test to date.

Especially as the game will be played at altitude at the legendary and iconic Estadio Azteca. And although supporters may be wary of the astonishing Mexico home record at the famous stadia, history very much favours the 1966 winners.

Have Mexico And England Ever Played At The World Cup?

Mexico and England have played each other on just one previous occasion at the World Cup finals. The two nations locked horns in the 1966 edition whereby England recorded a 2-0 group stage win thanks to goals from Bobby Charlton and Roger Hunt at the old Wembley.

That year, the Three Lions went all the way and lifted the Jules Rimet trophy at the expense of West Germany in the final. As for El Tri, their journey came to an end in the group stages after two draws and a defeat.

When Did Mexico And England Last Meet?

The most recent Mexico vs England match occurred in 2010 whereby goals from Ledley King, Peter Crouch and a Glen Johnson stunner helped clinch a 3-1 friendly win at the new Wembley. Fabio Capello was in charge of the Three Lions on that occasion who were getting set to embark on their World Cup journey in South Africa.

However, the wily Italian boss saw his charges crash out to Germany in the Round of 16 in what was a disappointing showing on the global stage.
