Mexico’s Home Record At The Azteca: England Face Daunting World Cup Task

How does the Mexico home record fare ahead of England’s World Cup Round of 16 clash at the iconic Estadio Azteca?

The Three Lions will square off against the co-hosts in the early hours of Monday morning and although El Tri haven’t made the last eight of football’s greatest international extravaganza since 1986, Javier Aguirre’s side have a lethal trick up their sleeve.

Mexico Home Record: El Tri Formidable At The Azteca

There’s no two ways about it, Mexico hold an astonishing record at the Azteca. Although it is temporarily known as the Mexico City Stadium owing to FIFA ruling, the aura of the stadia still remains. And with England next to visit the famous venue, supporters will be hoping the Three Lions can defy the World Cup odds and achieve a feat only two nations can boast.

Across their 89 competitive fixtures, only Honduras in 2013 (World Cup Qualifier) and Costa Rica in 2001 (World Cup Qualifier) have left the 87,523-seater victorious. Something of which makes the Azteca so daunting and intermediating is the fact it’s 2,200 meters above sea level.

With England just days away from playing there, head coach Thomas Tuchel has insisted his side arrive by Friday to help climatise to the surroundings and difficult conditions. As it stands, the Mexico vs England odds favour a Three Lions win but it’ll be an extremely difficult task. Even more so in front of a raucous and passionate home crowd.

Mexico home record from their 89 competitive fixtures:

  • Mexico wins – 70
  • Draws – 17
  • Mexico losses – 2
England 100/1

Mexico At The Azteca In The World Cup

The Mexico home record at the Azteca in the World Cup is one that’ll take some beating. With their only competitive defeats coming in qualifiers, it therefore means not a single side has claimed victory at the home of Mexican football during the main tournament.

What makes that feat even more impressive is that El Tri have held the World Cup finals on two previous occasions as well as this summer’s extravaganza. Albeit it as co-hosts this time around. In 1970, Mexico played all three group games at the Azteca without conceding (W2, D1). They were knocked out by Italy in Toluca.

In 1986, El Tri played four games at the legendary football institution and conceded on two occasions. They were knocked out by West Germany on penalties in San Nicolas. Fast-forward to 2026, the Mexicans have won all three Azteca clashes without conceding.

England Record At the Azteca

England have only played once at the Azteca and it was the stage for two of the World Cup’s most extraordinary moments. The Three Lions met Argentina in the Mexican capital in a quarter-final clash in 1986 whereby the late Diego Maradona scored his infamous ‘Hand of God’ goal.

The legendary Argentine forward leapt up for a cross and beat Peter Shilton to the ball using his hand and punched it into the net, which somehow wasn’t spotted by the officials. Just four minutes after that sour incident, Maradona demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the greatest of all-time.

Picking the ball up, Maradona waltzed 60 yards past Peter Beardsley, Peter Reid, Terry Butcher (twice) and Terry Fenwick before sliding the ball past Shilton. The 114,580 people in attendance witnessed what is widely regarded as the ‘Goal of the Century.’
