The Six Nations sees England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy compete in an iconic international rugby union tournament annually. Ireland are the current holders of the Six Nations title, and rugby union odds suggest they’re in with a chance of defending their crown in 2024, which would be quite the feat.
The Six Nations began life as the Home Nations in 1883, and it remained the Home Nations through to 1909. At this point, the Home Nations temporarily became the Five Nations between 1910 and 1931 because this was when France became a part of the competition for the first time.
The Five Nations then became the Home Nations for a spell once again, with France no longer competing in the competition between 1932 and 1939. This was only a temporary thing as the Five Nations then returned and for a long time, running from 1940 to 1999.
The Six Nations, as we know it now, became what it is in 2000 when Italy joined the party. It’s always been a popular tournament, but in its current guise, popularity has gone to a whole new level, with Six Nations odds some of the most accessed in the sporting world annually.
