Promoted just last season from the Championship, Sheffield United have endured one of the worst starts of any Premier League team to the season. Paul Heckingbottom was constantly showcased on next manager odds pages, so would this home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers make or break his time there.
Having picked up just a single point in 10 games in the Premier League, the Blades were desperate to secure a win or at least pick up a point against Wolves this weekend. Playing at Bramall Lane, Cameron Archer’s 72nd minute goal had the fans on their feet, only to concede in the 89th minute of normal time and bring the score back to 1-1. While Sheffield United fans began to console themselves once more, it was the final play of the game, 10 minutes into injury time when Fabio Silva brought down George Baldock to give the home side a penalty. Up stepped Oliver Norwood who buried it in the back of the net to give Sheffield United their first win of the season and pull back the pressure on Heckingbottom. BetVictor had him at 13/8 odds to be the next manager sacking, but at the time of writing, the odds have slightly lengthened to 7/4, so it seems that while his terrible start to the season is still ever-present, perhaps a first win on the cards could turn his fortune around.
Sheffield United manager sacked?
A much needed win for Heckingbottom, but still sitting bottom of the table on 4 points, this win was a crucial step in the right direction but just the first rung on a long ladder to survive the season. Upcoming games against Brighton and Bournemouth might still be the deciding factors in whether he stays on as manager.
