The Seattle Kraken is the newest franchise in the NHL. The latest expansion franchise, the Kraken, was entered into the Pacific Division of the Western Conference. They play their home games at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington.

The Most Important Seattle Kraken Players This Season
Right wing Brandon Tane, has become a key player for the Kraken. Tanev is famed for his physical, high-octane style, as well as his eye-catching offensive attributes. All of which have helped to establish Tanev as a fan favorite. The 32-year-old Toronto-born ace has plied his trade elsewhere in the NHL before with the Winnipeg Jets and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Danish right wing Oliver Bjorkstrand has been an ever-present on the Kraken roster in 2023-24. The 28-year-old has played in every regular season game so far and has 40 goal contributions to his name (13 goals and 27 assists).
Fellow forward, Jordan Eberle, is another popular player on the Seattle Kraken roster. Eberle is an NHL veteran, having played professional hockey since 2009. Eberle signed in the 2021 NHL expansion draft, having been left unprotected by the New York Islanders.
Defensive anchor, Vince Dunn, is also a popular face within the backbone of the Kraken team. Dunn has featured in 45 of Seattle’s 49 regular season games to date and boasts almost as many goal contributions as Bjorkstrand (37 – eight goals and 29 assists).
2023-24 Seattle Kraken NHL Season Overview
As for the Seattle Kraken’s season so far, it has been a largely inconsistent 2023-24 so far. After their opening 49 games, they’ve won 21 and lost 18, as well as ten overtime losses. Consequently, it’s no surprise to see the Kraken in the lower reaches of the 2023-24 Pacific Division.
Seattle currently has a negative goal difference, conceding five more than they’ve scored so far this season. A negative goal difference isn’t sustainable if they want to go deep into the postseason playoffs again this year.
The top three teams in each division will automatically qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. The following two teams earn wild card places. At the time of writing, the Kraken are in fifth place, so they’re likely to be pitched against one of the top-ranked teams in the postseason once again. They’ve proved they can upset the form book with last year’s success over the Avalanche, but some may argue the performances of the Seattle Kraken players have been more inconsistent this year than last.
Seattle Kraken History and Titles
In 2018, the NHL confirmed the arrival of a new expansion team. The formation of the Seattle Kraken marked the NHL’s return to Seattle after a century-long hiatus. The franchise, named after the mythical sea creature, was entered into the 2021-22 NHL season, bringing a wave of anticipation and excitement to the Pacific Northwest.
The team’s ownership group, led by Jerry Bruckheimer and David Bonderman, masterminded Seattle’s return in July 2020, when they formally entered the expansion draft to form a competitive roster. The team’s name and branding were revealed simultaneously, with Seattle welcoming its first professional ice hockey team since the Totems, which played in the Western Hockey League.
The last Seattle franchise to compete in the NHL for the Stanley Cup was the Seattle Metropolitans, who won the Stanley Cup in 1917 before folding seven years later.
Ahead of their inaugural 2021-22 season, The Kraken appointed Dave Hakstol as its first head coach. Mark Giordano was named the first captain of the Kraken, but this soon became a vacant position due to his exit for the Toronto Maple Leafs in March 2022. Their opening regular season game was against the Las Vegas Golden Knights, themselves an NHL expansion franchise. The Golden Knights won narrowly 4-3, but the Kraken went on to win game number two against the Nashville Predators.
Although they finished last in the Pacific Division in 2021-22, the Kraken went on to clinch a playoff berth after the 2022-23 regular season. They were the inaugural wild card from the Western Conference. They stunned defending champions, the Colorado Avalanche, before losing in the second round of the postseason to the Dallas Stars.
