Although there are certainly uncomplicated deals to be made, the majority of trades within the NBA necessitate a deep understanding of the intricacies of the salary cap and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Moreover, there exist misconceptions regarding the underlying mechanics of NBA trades. Understanding the salary cap is seriously one of the most important things to understanding trades in the NBA.
The salary cap serves as a mechanism for maintaining competitive balance within the league. It represents the maximum allowable expenditure a team can allocate to player salaries. It’s important to note that the salary cap can fluctuate annually due to various factors, with revenue playing a central role in these adjustments. Teams have the flexibility to exceed the salary cap in certain circumstances, which is why the league often characterizes it as a “soft cap.”
When are you able to make a trade?
NBA trades can be made at any time after a team has been eliminated until the trade deadline of the following season. This means that teams that miss the playoffs are eligible to make a trade immediately as early as the following day of the same season. However, eliminated teams can only contact other teams that have also been eliminated from playoff contention. If an NBA team has interest in trading for a player on a team that hasn’t yet been eliminated then that team has to wait until the other team is also eliminated from the playoffs or win the NBA Championship.
After the season ends, each of the 30 teams in the NBA can make trades throughout the entire summer until early February. The NBA uses the second Thursday in February as the trade deadline. The week before the trade deadline is when most of the NBA trades take place. The NBA implemented a trade deadline so that teams have to lock in a roster before the last 25 or so games since the NBA Playoffs begin in May.
Benefits of Having a Trade Deadline
A trade deadline provides structure so that the NBA product doesn’t become unfair. If there wasn’t a trade deadline, teams would be able to trade their star player to a team that’s already a contender in the last few games of the season to give an unequal advantage to the rest of the playoff teams.
NBA teams often decide their direction for the rest of the season at the trade deadline as well. Teams with serious NBA Championship aspirations tend to make trades to boost their roster and use the trade deadline to address weaknesses within their current roster. Whereas teams that don’t like their shot of winning it all may trade away talented players for draft picks and develop younger talent for the rest of that season. Teams are not allowed to sign a free agent under an arrangement where the player will subsequently be traded to another team, except in cases where the free agent in question is their own player.
Two Trade Types
There are two different trade types that can happen within the NBA: a simultaneous trade and a non-simultaneous trade. The non-simultaneous trade is viewed as typical trade. If a team trades a single player for another player, players or draft picks this is considered a non-simultaneous trade. In non-simultaneous trades contracts do not have to match. This trade type typically happens when a team is trying to lower its payroll to get below the luxury tax and can be referred to as a “salary dump”.
In simultaneous trades, contracts typically match between the players involved in the trade to some extent. Something to consider when determining how much the teams will need the contracts to match up include how close a team is being over the cap. Simultaneous trades generally include a player that may not be wanted by the inquiring team but include the player for contractual reasons. The money has to work on both sides and additional players added in these types of deals are often referred to as “salary fillers”.
