Football stats can tell a different story from the scoreline. A side might win three on the bounce while giving up plenty of chances, or go a fortnight without scoring despite getting into good positions. Our football statistics coverage looks beyond the result, bringing team form, player records and head-to-head analysis into the conversation around Premier League odds at BetVictor.
Here you can read up on the numbers behind a fixture, follow a club’s scoring record or revisit a familiar football record. There is plenty to discuss before a Premier League weekend or a Championship midweek, particularly when the form book does not quite match what you have been watching.
Football Statistics Behind the Next Fixture
A five-match form guide is a starting point. It shows who has been picking up points, but it leaves plenty unsaid. Three victories against struggling opposition can look very different from three wins during a run against the top six.
That is why our football coverage puts recent results alongside the opponent, venue and team news. A club’s home record might explain more about Saturday’s match than its overall position, particularly if most of its dropped points have come away.
Think about a club that has just changed manager. Most of its season averages were earned playing somebody else’s football. If the new boss has changed the formation or brought a striker back into the side, the last few performances deserve a closer look.
Premier League Stats and Team Form
Our Premier League stats section takes a closer look at England’s top flight, with club coverage, records and the numbers behind the fixtures. Title races attract the headlines, but the battle at the other end can produce just as much to examine.
Look at goals scored and conceded together. A team finding the net regularly may still be struggling to keep opponents out, while a run of clean sheets needs to be weighed against the chances allowed and the strength of those attacks.
Home and away splits are worth checking too. A side that presses aggressively in front of its own supporters may spend far more time defending on the road. Combining the two records can hide that difference.
Championship and EFL Football Stats
Tuesday night can arrive quickly after a demanding Saturday in the EFL. Before judging a side on its last result, check who started and whether the same players are likely to go again.
A striker’s scoring run may have come before an injury, or a club’s recent away record might include several matches against promotion contenders. Club pages such as our Birmingham stats coverage give you somewhere to follow the side more closely alongside the wider football analysis.
League and cup records should also be kept distinct. A heavily rotated cup team can tell you little about the eleven likely to start the following league match.
Player Stats: Goals, Assists and Shots
Seeing a familiar striker climb the scoring charts is one thing. Working out whether he is still getting the service that brought those goals takes a bit more digging, particularly if his minutes or position have changed.
A forward with five goals from ten starts is a different proposition from one with five goals across ten brief substitute appearances. Penalty duties can make a sizeable difference as well, particularly when comparing totals between teammates.
A player can shoot five times and give the keeper nothing to do. That is worth remembering when moving between total shots and shots on target: they answer different questions about the same performance.
You will also come across figures per 90 minutes, which put players’ output on a common timescale. Check the minutes behind the rate, though. A substitute who has had one busy twenty-minute cameo can look exceptional without having played enough for a useful comparison.
Expected Goals and Chance Quality
You have probably seen xG alongside the score on a match graphic. Short for expected goals, it puts a value on a shooting chance by estimating how likely it is to be scored. Where the shot came from and the angle to goal are among the details a model can use.
Imagine one side shooting from distance all afternoon while its opponents create a couple of clear openings inside the box. A shot count misses that distinction. Adding up the xG values gives another way to examine the chances involved.
There is no obligation for the final score to match the xG. A side with 2.0 can fail to score, and one that exceeds its figure does not owe a worse performance next week. What happened during the game still matters when reading the number.
Head-to-Head Records, Corners and Cards
Five meetings without a defeat sounds encouraging until you realise most of them involved different managers and a different squad. Start with the dates when reading a head-to-head record, then ask how much of that history belongs to the teams playing now.
Even the latest meeting might have an explanation tucked away in the report. Was someone sent off after ten minutes? Did the score include extra time? Those details can change how much you take from the result.
With corners, check both sides of the count: those a team wins and those it gives away. Then consider the match situation. Spending half an hour trying to break down a deep defence is different from seeing out a lead with everyone behind the ball.
Cards need their own reading. Fouls, individual roles, the opposition and the referee can all be relevant; a team’s booking total alone does not explain who is likely to be involved in the challenges.
Using Football Stats Alongside Match Previews
Start with the question you are researching. Both teams to score calls for a look at both attacks and both defences, rather than one club’s goals alone. A player-shot selection needs attention to his expected role and minutes, not just his name near the top of a season table.
For a closer look at an upcoming game, our football betting tips put the relevant form and team news into a match preview. Read why a selection has been made and check the available price; a late withdrawal can change the thinking behind an earlier assessment.
There will always be matches that refuse to follow the numbers. A useful trend is something to investigate, not a reason to treat an outcome as certain or to spend more than you had planned.
