The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is now well underway, with every team having played their first round of fixtures. The teams that have already recorded victories will look to build on their success, while those who haven’t will aim to get on the right track this week. With plenty of football still to be played, every team remains in contention.
The Story So Far
Group A
After two games played each, Group A now looks like a straight shootout between Palmeiras and Inter Miami. Both teams have a win and a draw to their names and are sat on 4 points. Porto and Al Ahly have each have 1 point.
Group B
All teams in Group B have now played two matches each, and surprisingly, it’s Botofogo who lead the way on 6 points. Paris Saint-Germain, who Botofogo just defeated, and Atlético Madrid are both on 3 points, while the Seattle Sounders are bottom with 0 points.
Group C
After one game played in Group C, Bayern Munich lead the way after their 1-0 demolition of Auckland City, who are rooted to the foot of the table. Benfica and Boca Juniors shared the spoils, each collecting 1 point.
Group D
Flamengo and Chelsea are first and second in Group D, having won their opening games of the competition. LAFC and Esperance de Tunis have 0 points in third and fourth.
Group E
River Plate were the only team to record a victory in their opening Group E fixture, defeating Urawa Red Diamonds, who are bottom of the standings as a result. CF Monterrey and Inter Milan drew in their game and have 1 point a piece.
Group F
Sundowns got off to a winning start in Group F, defeating Ulsan Hyundai FC in their opening fixture. Therefore, Sundowns are top with 3 points, with Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense trailing after their draw on 1 point each.
Group G
In Group G, Juventus and Manchester City got off to winning starts and are first and second, respectively, with 3 points each. Wydad Casablanca and Al Ain are still to get off the mark.
Group H
Red Bull Salzburg top Group H. They defeated Pachuca in their opening fixture. Real Madrid and Al-Hilal could only manage a draw, trailing Salzburg by two points, with the Austrians now on three.
Key Upcoming Fixtures
Benfica vs Auckland City – Friday, June 20
Benfica vs Auckland City may appear like it’s a straightforward win and three points for Bruno Lage’s side. However, second place in Group C could be decided by goal difference, a goal difference that can be improved against the part-timers from New Zealand.
Flamengo vs Chelsea – Friday, June 20
Flamengo and Chelsea won their opening fixtures in Group D, so Flamengo vs Chelsea is a battle between first and second. Both are likely to make it through the group, but finishing first will matter.
Sundowns vs Borussia Dortmund – Saturday, June 21
Sundowns vs Borussia Dortmund is an intriguing clash because the former come into the match with a win under their belt, while the latter, tipped as dark horses to win the competition, could only manage a draw in their opening game.
Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Diamonds – Saturday, June 21
Beaten Champions League finalists Inter were expected to do well in the Club World Cup. After a draw in their first game, Inter Milan vs Urawa Red Diamonds is their chance to get their first win.
Real Madrid vs Pachuca – Sunday, June 22
Real Madrid, also one of the teams tipped to go all the way at the Club World Cup, could only manage a draw against Al-Hilal in their competition opener. So, Real Madrid vs Pachuca must end in a Madrid win to get them back in the mix.
Final Thoughts
You can never really judge a tournament after the first round of fixtures, and as a result, football betting online hasn’t changed in its opinion that teams like PSG, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich are the teams expected to go far, even though a couple of them have had disappointing results.
The second round of fixtures is now underway, and they will be more telling and indicative of the teams that will likely advance to the next round.
