History of the National League

The National League came into existence in 1979 as the Alliance Premier League and was made up of purely semi-professional sides. It was formed as the lowest level of the English Footballing pyramid to be played on a national basis and remains so to this day - although now the division harbours a raft of professional sides. And it’s often those professional clubs that understandably boast the advantage in the Outright National League Betting Markets, with bigger budgets likely to be a vital factor come the end of the season.

Altrincham FC had the honour of claiming the inaugural title. In fact, they won it back-to-back in the first two years without being promoted. Football League regulars Barnet, Macclesfield Town, Cheltenham Town, Lincoln City, and Stevenage Borough have all enjoyed success at this level over the years.

For sponsorship purposes, the division has come under many guises including the GM Vauxhall Conference and Blue Square Premier, but today is known as the Vanarama Premier.

National League Structure and Schedule

The 2020/21 season saw a minor change to the structure of the division than previous years due to the financial issues that forced Macclesfield Town to fold. This meant that 23 teams as opposed to the usual 24 featured in the division. This impacted slightly further down the pyramid with only three teams facing relegation instead of the usual four. Those three sides will drop down to either the National League North or National League South. At the top end of the table if you’re looking to make a bet on National League football, you’ll be spoilt for choice as there are always plenty of former Football League sides in contention. But with just one team earning automatic promotion to League Two, you can bet the excitement will go right to the wire come the end of the season. And that’s before we get into the action of the play-offs – the structure of which is a little different from the EFL divisions above. The teams that finish 2nd and 3rd go straight in the semi-finals, while those that end the campaign in 4th to 7th must do battle in the quarter-finals to earn their semi-final space. The knockout competition then determines which lucky side gets the second promotion spot. Ready for a bet on the National League? BetVictor has you covered.
