That\u2019s almost double the number that tuned in for the equivalent game last time round. Not bad for a curtain-raiser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the first weekend, a combined <strong>4.6 million people<\/strong> tuned in on the BBC. Even Ireland\u2019s pool match against Japan drew more than half a million, proof that it\u2019s not just the big names pulling a crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of the pool stages, UK viewing figures had climbed to <strong>7.1 million<\/strong> in total. Women\u2019s rugby is clearly moving from the fringes into the living rooms of the masses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over in France, broadcaster TF1 clocked up <strong>3.2 million viewers<\/strong> for the France v Italy pool match. For a group-stage fixture, that\u2019s the sort of number you\u2019d expect for a Saturday night drama. Put it all together and the early matches have already racked up over <strong>6 million combined viewers in the UK and France alone<\/strong>. Ilona Maher: One-woman social media army<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ilona Maher isn\u2019t just leading the USA on the pitch. She\u2019s practically carrying the entire rugby internet on her shoulders. With <strong>5.2 million followers<\/strong>, she\u2019s got more reach than the rest of the top 30 combined. You could almost say the USA\u2019s social presence <em>is<\/em> Ilona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>2. England\u2019s strength in numbers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>England might not have a single player in Maher\u2019s stratosphere, but they\u2019ve got <strong>half of the top 30<\/strong>. It\u2019s a bit like their forward pack: relentless, everywhere you look, and impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>3. A global flavour<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From Brazil\u2019s Thalia Costa to Fiji\u2019s Sesenieli Donu, it\u2019s not just the usual suspects. These breakout stars are proof that <strong>women\u2019s rugby influence is going properly global<\/strong>. Half the team could fill out Twickenham with their combined followings \u2014 not bad for a side that prefers mauls to memes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3rd \u2013 New Zealand (534k followers)<br><\/strong>Powered by Portia Woodman-Wickliffe and Stacey Waaka, the Black Ferns are snapping at England\u2019s heels. A tidy backline both on and off the pitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4th \u2013 France (204k followers)<br><\/strong>Stylish on the field and on the \u2018Gram. Not enough to break into the top three, but Pauline Bourdon Sansus gives them flair points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5th \u2013 Scotland (140k followers)<br><\/strong>Rhona Lloyd carries the flag here, proving that even a smaller rugby nation can punch above its weight in the influencer game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6th\u201310th \u2013 The chasing pack (100k\u2013139k)<br><\/strong>Ireland, Wales, Brazil, Australia, Canada. All bringing in six-figure totals, usually thanks to one or two breakout stars. Consider them the mid-table grafters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11th and below \u2013 Finding their feet<br><\/strong>South Africa, Italy, Fiji, Spain, Japan, Samoa. Not massive numbers (yet), but they\u2019re one viral TikTok away from climbing the table. Watch this space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-popularity-of-women-s-rugby-will-the-world-cup-leave-a-legacy\">The Popularity of Women\u2019s Rugby: Will the World Cup Leave a Legacy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In August last year, there were just <strong>2,900 searches<\/strong> in Google UK (according to data from <a href=\"http:\/\/kwfinder.com\">kwfinder.com<\/a>) for the term \u201cwomens rugby.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward a year to August 2024 and this rose astronomically to a huge <strong>90,500<\/strong>. That\u2019s surge of over 3000%!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now of course, lots of those searches could be people looking for the World Cup coverage, results and news. But has the tournament had an impact on those looking for local teams, i.e. people who might be thinking of supporting or even joining their local club?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Searches for \u201cwomens rugby near me\u201d have more than doubled comparing August 2025 to August 2024 and with the tournament not even complete yet, we reckon we can expect to see more impact to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Winter, Marketing Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.betvictor.com\/en-gb\/casino\">BetVictor Casino<\/a> sums up our findings, commenting: \u201cThis is, without doubt, the biggest Women\u2019s Rugby World Cup we\u2019ve ever seen in a year that has been astronomical for women\u2019s sport in England in particular.
