It was another case of so close yet so far for Gareth Southgate\u2019s England as again they came up short in another European Final. Naturally, Southgate\u2019s expected exit was confirmed today just 24 hours after the team returned from Euro 2024. Let\u2019s look at the likely runners and riders to replace him and take arguably the toughest job in football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

On paper, Graham Potter looks a type that plenty at the FA would be keen on. The former Brighton man suffered a similar fate to many, with a sacking at Chelsea that was arguably premature and rarely does an exit at that club do too much to damage the reputation of a manger. Having started in Sweden he ended up in the UK managing Swansea in 2018 before joining Brighton where he had a great spell. Potter describes his teams as tactically flexible, attacking and possession based which could help to evolve the England style to be slightly more pleasing on the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ex-Everton midfielder has been involved in the England set-up as Under 21 boss for a while now and the FA are often keen to look at internal candidates. There is continuity when you consider he has spent the last few years with the under-21 side and worked in the under-20 set up prior to that. He gained silverware in the U21 European Championship in 2023 and would not be a surprise choice for the role in many people\u2019s eyes. Of course, he could be a slightly underwhelming pick to some England fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Howe who made his name at Bournemouth is widely reported by various media outlets as viewed as a very credible candidate for the job. He has been impressive in his time at Newcastle and as English coaches go, will rank high on the shortlist for this job. The pressure of the England job may not be such a draw to Howe who has an exciting project on his hands in the North East, but he may also be aware that the chance to take the England job doesn\u2019t come around too often. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another ex Chelsea boss who surprisingly is at a loose end despite ending the season well with the Blues. A mutual decision to move on at the end of last season\u2019s campaign seemed odd. His time at Spurs saw the side play some good football which famously led to a Champions League final. The FA have never felt too keen on looking at candidates who aren\u2019t English but given the limited pool Pochettino surely could come into the conversation if Southgate leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It feels like you need to have been sacked by Chelsea to have half a chance of being in with the England job but Thomas Tuchel is another with that on his CV. He also has managed domestically at massive clubs around Europe winning titles in Germany, France and of course the Champions League with Chelsea after a 1-0 win over Man City. He does seem to have his quirks and some at his previous clubs have found him a challenge to work with. He would be one of the most interesting on the shortlist to take the job in my view and would certainly shake things up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My personal choice for the job but surely an unlikely one? The FA have always felt reluctant to appoint a foreign manager. Sven was probably considered a flop in his period in charge, and Fabio Capello certainly was. Klopp would be a very different type of candidate, he knows the Premier League inside out, plays attacking football and can handle pressure. His likely outspoken nature would be a negative for the FA and he has been keen to take a break from football. I think as a tactician, man-manager and a coach who plays good football, he is the man the FA should (but won\u2019t) move for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Frank Lampard has been touted as a possible England manager by Gary Lineker who was impressed with the former England midfielder when he was on screen with him covering the Euros for the BBC. Management has not been easy for Lampard who again is another former Chelsea boss. His first effort at the Blues saw him leave amid frustrations with the transfer policy and Declan Rice was said to be one of the key players Lampard wanted to sign. After a break from management, he went back into a difficult situation at Everton and kept them up thanks to a big end of season effort which saw safety secured on the penultimate day of the season with a comeback win over Crystal Palace. The following season didn\u2019t go well and he was relived of his duties in January. In a strange turn of events Lampard later that season acted as caretaker manager at Chelsea which saw a poor end to the season with Lampard gaining just one win in eleven games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the FA want continuity, could it be time for Southgate\u2019s long-term assistance Steve Holland to take the reigns? Personally, I can\u2019t see this as a likely angle. Holland has gone under the radar for many years and whilst a trusted lieutenant a step up to be the manager would perhaps send out the wrong message. Holland hasn\u2019t really got too much of note to talk about, his supposed fall out with Ben White perhaps is another reason why we wont see him in the running. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, why don\u2019t England look to a coach who has won trophies? The Dutchwoman the chosen candidate to replace Phi Neville and delivered a trophy on home soil when the Lionesses won the 2022 Women\u2019s Euros. It would be a bold move for the FA but eventually we will see a female coach in a top job in the men\u2019s game, so why not now?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
