What is the Arc de Triomphe Race?
The Arc de Triomphe, also known as simply The Arc, is a top flat racing event that is held annually at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris, France. Thoroughbreds over the age of three can participate in this race, with owners, trainers, and jockeys being eager to field a strong performance, due to the immense prestige that the race offers.
Of course, it also comes with a substantial prize pool, currently sitting at €5,000,000 (€1,714,000 of which will go to the horse that finishes in first place).
A total of 16 horses participate in The Arc, with the race being run over 1 1/2 miles, close to 2,400 metres. The track itself is elongated making it a challenging course for both horses and jockeys alike.
Most Successful Horses, Jockeys, Trainers, and Owners
A total of eight horses hold the honour of being the most successful in Arc de Triomphe history, all winning the race twice:
- Ksar (Won in 1921 and 1922)
- Motrico (Won in 1930 and 1932)
- Corrida (Won in 1936 and 1937)
- Tantième (Won in 1950 and 1951)
- Ribot (Won in 1955 and 1956)
- Alleged (Won in 1977 and 1978)
- Trêve (Won in 2013 and 2014)
- Enable (Won in 2017 and 2018)
The fastest Arc de Triomphe time was achieved by Found in 2016, who won the race in an astounding 2m 23.61s.
As for the most successful Arc de Triomphe jockey of all time, few will be surprised to learn that this title is held by the infamous Frankie Dettori, arguably the best and most well-rounded horse racing jockey of all time. He has ridden a total of 6 Arc de Triomphe winners, the most recent of which was Enable when he did the double in 2017-2018.
André Fabre is the most successful trainer in the history of the Arc de Triomphe, winning it 8 times between 1987 and 2019. There are also two owners that share the honour of being the most successful: Marcel Boussac and Khalid Abdullah, both with six winners a piece. Khalid Abdullah is arguably the more infamous of the pair, as he was the owner of the widely loved Enable, which has become synonymous with the Arc de Triomphe race.

What To Expect From the 2025 Arc de Triomphe
Of course, there are already plenty of storylines building for the 2025 iteration of the Arc de Triomphe, which is scheduled for the first Sunday in October (The 5th of October 2025). The one question on the minds of horse racing fans and experts alike will be: Can Bluestocking defend their title? She showed great potential and is still a young horse, so it’s highly possible for her to go off as the favourite in the next Arc.
Now, another horse to consider going into the 2025 Arc de Triomphe will be Sosie, whom André Fabre will be keen to enter into a few races before the big one in October. The progress and form of Sosie will be something that many experts will be closely monitoring, as he was heavily backed to win this year’s event. He didn’t have a terrible race by any means, but slight improvements will be needed if Sosie is to be victorious in the next Arc de Triomphe.
Aventure and Los Angeles are likely to feature, too, especially now that they’ve shown their calibre for this infamously difficult course. They could be up there amongst the favourites, as the experience will have aided them significantly, giving their respective trainers Christophe Ferland and Aidan O’Brien an idea of what needs improvement. Finally, it’s probable that a variety of younger, 3-year-old horses will be running their first Arc in 2025, some of which may rise to the top of the betting markets.
