YOUR ALL TIME XI -
YOUR SELECTION MUST BE PLACED BEFORE THURSDAY 3RD MAY
VICTOR CHANDLER’S SELECTIONS
-
GOALKEEPER PETER SCHMEICHEL
Great Dane who was a colossus for United and his presence and athleticism make him the obvious choice.
-
RIGHT BACK GARY NEVILLE
Almost by process of elimination the England international must be the selection from such a motley crew; consistency his strong suit and now an outstanding pundit.
-
CENTRAL DEFENDER TONY ADAMS
Had his problems off the field but a great leader and defender and the key component of the great Arsenal defence.
-
CENTRAL DEFENDER PAUL MCGRATH
Plagued by injury but a magnificent defender in his prime and a perfect foil for Adams.
-
LEFT BACK ASHLEY COLE
Will never win any popularity contest but he was a better left back than Pearce and Winterburn; not as good as he was but in his pomp world class.
-
RIGHT MIDFIELDER DAVID BECKHAM
A toss up between Golden Balls and Cristiano Ronaldo with the nod going to Becks for longevity over Ronnie.
-
CENTRAL MIDFIELDER STEVEN GERRARD
An absolute toss up given the best Paul Gascoigne isn’t even in the shortlist; Gerrard just shades it as on his day he still is unplayable.
-
CENTRAL MIDFIELDER ROY KEANE
The Irishman was not everyone’s cup of tea but had a wonderful engine, was a born winner and leader of a magnificent United side.
-
LEFT MIDFIELDER RYAN GIGGS
Twelve titles and counting you must get the Welshman in the side although John Barnes runs him a very close second.
-
FORWARD ALAN SHEARER
All great names but, despite the fact that he didn’t get the domestic honours of others, Shearer is the best.
-
FORWARD THIERRY HENRY
Unlikely to get the Irish vote but had grace, poise, pace and balance and came back this year from the Elephant’s graveyard that is the MLS to show he still knew where the back of the net was.
